  • Can conservatives steal back the term "liberal" and return it to its true political meaning?

Most people who have been pigeon-holed into the category of "conservative" really aren't. Most of us are in fact liberals, the classic liberal of the 18th and 19th century. When the Progressive Movement started in the early 1900s it was called just that, Progressive. However, by the mid 1930s, Progressives had stolen the term "liberal" and changed it to suit their own meaning. There can be zero argument that the United States was founded on liberal political theory and values. Yes, for those of you who will hop right on the slavery bus I DO see a HUGE problem between a piece of classic liberal theory like Rousseau's "The Social Contract " and slavery, especially when dealing with Jefferson. However, that isn't the point I was making, and slavery actually does fit in with liberal government when you look at the laws as laid down in the Constitution about states rights versus the federal government in dealing with "fugitives from labor".

The question I am really asking is can we classic conservatives steal back the term with education, or has a "classical education" gone by the wayside and the term is now lost to those of us who agree with Burke, Locke, Jefferson and Rousseau?

  • What are American liberals reading?

I asked this late last night, and got nothing. And I mean nothing. I am going to try it again.

Less than a week ago, I posed a question as to what Conservatives are reading, and tried to gear it towards maybe the last 3 to 5 books they have read on political science and economics. I got some good answers, other, I think were looking for 2 points.

Dead serious question, what would you recommend a conservative, like myself, go down to the library and read?

(Half jokingly) I won't buy a book by a liberal author, but Sun Tzu wrote many years ago that we need to know our enemy. I am more than willing to look at the other side, but I would like to know maybe 3 books that a liberal would say would be worthwhile for a conservative to read.

Big note. I am currently reading "The Reagan Diaries". The last few books I have read are "Liberal Fascism" by Jonah Goldberg, The Federalist Papers, and Liberty and Tyranny. My next 2 books are "The 5000 Year Leap" and "The Road To Serfdom" by a Nobel Prize winning economist. Al Frankin's "Rush Limbaugh Is A Big, Fat Idiot" won't make the cut.

Oh, and I do know that Thomas Paine was pro-French Revolution, while Edmund Burke was not, and why, so serious reading only.

  • Conservatives in America, what books are you reading?

What are the last 5 books you have read? I have found myself reading a whole lot more now, and much of what I am reading I should have read before, others are what made me read them.

For me, the last 5 books I have read are

Liberty and Tyranny, which then made me re-read

Bantam's book The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United State

also made me read The Federalist Papers

Liberal Fascism, I finally read that one through

    and The Giver

    Currently reading The Reagan Diaries

  • A-10C Questionj?

I used to work A-10s in the 1990s. It was obviously the older model.

What I was wondering was what is the difference between working the 2 models? I used to work ECM, so how is that tied into the system now? Is it like the F-16, or is it still mostly it's own set of systems, like in the As?

What is different in the cockpit? I had heard they swapped out the throttle quad.

Actually, anything anyone could tell me would be great. But, like I said, I worked ECM, with the ALR-69, the ALE-40, and either an ALQ-131 Block 2 or an ALQ-184, and yes, I worked flightline and backshop on all of those systems at some point.

Oh, and I don't mean to sound like a ****, but unless you have sat in the cockpit and started the APU, which I have done too many times to count on the As, you most likely cannot tell me anything I haven't already read on the internet.

  • Question for all Ron Paul supporters about 1988?

Why is it no one mentions that Ron Paul was the 1988 Libertarian Party candidate for President? I mean, he got 431,750 popular votes. He has experience in running for president. Shouldn't that be a big plus to let Americans know that by voting for Ron Paul, you are voting for a former Presidential candidate?

Or would this minor detail simply haze things and make people ask themselves, "Why would he need to be the Republican nomination if he was already the nominee of another party? I mean he still has Libertarian values, his supporters always talk about him as a Libertarian, so why doesn't he just run as a Libertarian? Why is he calling himself a Republican if he was the FACE, the person up to win it ALL, for another party? Did they kick him out, like the Dems did with Lieberman?"

Why is it that no one has mentioned that the 2004 Libertarian Presidential candidate Michael Badnarik has endorsed him and asked other Libertarian Party members to do the same?

  • NFL logos in knit patterns?

I am looking for NFL logos in knit patterns. I have NO drawing talent, but follow instructions very well, so I l am looking for preferable a licensed pattern, but a pattern that someone else has done would be great in there are no licensed patterns.

NCAA logos would be great too.

Note: These are for PRIVATE use. No item made will be sold. This is NOT a money-making project, rather it is a project for making things for myself and a few friends.

  • Scarf for a 4 year-old?

I knit all the time, but I do things mostly for adults.

I don't have kids, never have had kids, and while my neices were young, I was in the USAF spending most of my time far from the girls, so Uncle Chris missed a lot of time when his girls were young. I have no idea how long to make a scarf for a 4 year-old girl.

I figure that 4 inches wide is good, but how long should I make it? No, I can't just see how tall she is, because #1, it's for some friends of mine who live in Germany now, #2, even if the child father or mother told me how tall she was, it wouldn't do me any good because I have zero fashion sense and wouldn't know how long to make it because I don't know what 4 year-old girls like for a scarf length, nor have any idea what is practical.

I would appreciate any ideas on how long to make it. The scarf is being made with size 8 needles, using Red Heart Supersaver yarn in the color pattern Ocean. I intend to make fringe 3-4 inches long.

    Thanks!!!

  • Which is more annoying?

    Ron Paul

Ron Paul supporters who think that they have received the answers to everything about life and if you don't see things the same way they or their leader-guy Ron Paul sees them then you are an uniformed tool of the media and the two-party system

    It's a toss-up for me.

    What do you think?

  • Men who knit?

I have started knitting about 8 months ago. For me, it was something that I picked up because I spend a lot of time watching TV, but wanted to do something while I was watching TV. Mostly things I watch are cartoons and sports.

Much of the knitting sites have things for women, but not a whole lot for men. Has anyone found a site with more things that men would want to do?

I do a lot of things for charity, like hats and scarves, and have started doing knit stuffed animals. Those things are easy to find. Some of the things I have made for myself are things in Denver Broncos colors, but really, a hat, a scarf, and maybe a pair of mittens is about all in that ilk. I am eventually going to make a sweater for myself, but I am still building the skill set needed for that.

What I am really looking for is a site for men who knit. No, while I have nothing at all against gays and have many gay friends, I am not gay. I just watch too much TV and knitting gives me an excuse to watch TV

  • Did I finally figure out Ron Paul?

I think I may have figured out Ron Paul so tell me where I went wrong if I went wrong.

In 1992, H. Ross Perot started a campaign for presidency as an independent. In the end, he got about 19% of the overall vote, and 0% of electoral college votes. Most people believe that had Perot not run, Pres. Bush would have stood a much better chance of winning. So, in the final outcome, Republicans and independent conservatives lost HUGE with the election of Bill Clinton.

Perot showed that you cannot do it alone. You need a party. Ron Paul is using the Republican party machine to work his way up. I would like to remind you that he is telling EVERYONE how broken the system is in the entire government process. Yet he is using the two party system, which is claims to abhor, to try to be elected to a higher office? That doesn't make sense.

Perot showed him you must use the system otherwise almost 1/5 of the national voters going for you means nothing.

Tell me where I went wrong.
