I have an older imac that asks me for a password on startup. Is there anyway I can change this password?

I acquired the computer from someone else who also did not know the password. The password request comes up before the desktop is revealed. I would say it is a startup password.

If you have the MacOS CD that came with your iMac, you can boot from that CD, then go through the beginning of the setup process until you get to the point where you can use the password reset tool.

first you need a boot disk. if they did not leave you with one try calling apple and asking for a replacement one (or call to change the password but thats a lot more work)

in case you nonetheless have the education manuals for that computing gadget then you may "flash the bios " i.e. reset the bios settings by technique of shifting a jumper on the motherboard for 5 seconds and then putting the jumper back to its unique position.this may reset the computing gadget to its starting up with out passwords by any skill.
