My toy poodle is having problems with her ear...?
Every since I got her, she has scratched her ear. One in particular. The vet (two times) said that nothing was wrong and I take her to the groomer every six weeks they can't see anything wrong either. Now I just went on Friday, October 12, 2007 and they said that there seemed to be a wax bulid up. So we put the special candle in her ear and got all of the wax out by a soothing burning of the candle. Then when I got home with her she started in scratching again. She scratched so much that her ear was bleeding yesterday. I don't know what to do with her...take her to the vet again??
Thanks for any and all help!!

Have you talked to her breeder? Has this always been going on?

My mom's toy poodle has chronic ear infections. They go away for a while after being treated and then come back. Her issues are related to poor breeding. The breeder just continued breeding a dog that had ear issues. Poodles tend to have ear problems since they are one of the breeds who's ears flop over so they don't get as much air in their ears to keep them dry. Perfect breeding places for yeast infections, etc. You might have to get the vet to do a ear flushing and plucking monthly (or however often the vet recommends). Otherwise, you might have to see if there's some ear drops you can use at home to help keep her ears dried out and hopefully less prone to infection or irritation.
You might also ask the vet to see if she has ear mites. If your vet is having problems diagnosing an ear issue, you might consider changing vets.
Also, poodles tend to have allergies. I have my poodle on a no-grain food (Timberwolf Organics). I would look into putting your dog on a no-grain diet. This might completely eliminate the problem. There's many brands out there.... Candiae, Timberwolf Organics, Wellness

My minature poodle had chronic ear problems his whole life, his last few years he had to wear one of those huge collars to prevent him from scratching. No one could ever totally eliminate the problem. Since I have gotten a new Labradoodle (1/2 poodle) I have been closely watching the ears, and sure enough...he started having some problems. I happened into a Red Bandana pet store and was told that all the artificial things they put in mass produced dog food (Even the $$$ ones) cause allergic reactions, ie stomach, ear or joint problems. Since switching to their brand name Ultra Premium Oven Baked Lamb, Millet & Rice food he has the most beautiful, healthy pink ears! It has been 2 years and no more problems

I would take her to the vet. Never heard of using a candle in a grooming salon. Does she only scratch after getting groomed? Are the pulling the ear hair out?

Although costly, I'd recommend a referral to a specialist from your vet. Also, do you get her ears plucked at the groomer? I doubt that's the problem, but needs to be done. Get a referral to a specialist. Good luck!

Might be related to allergies if there is nothing visible in there.
I think cocker spaniels often have issues with their ears.

Ok, earcandling (in dogs and humans) doesn't really do anything other than feel good. It doesn't draw anything out.
Second, I would check the dog for food allergies. She may be allergic to the grain in her food.
