Color Ink Cartride problem for HP PSC 1600 All-in-one series?

A few days ago I printed something but then realized that it wasn't what I wanted to print. So I went to the printing window and clicked cancel but it didn't so I shut off my printer. Then I turned it on and now it says to "remove and check color cartridge". I've done this before and my printer has functioned normally so I don't know what to do. I know that I probably shouldn't have shut it off like that. My black cartridge works fine. I barely use my color cartridge and I checked the ink levels as well as the expiration date and everything is fine. I even performed updates on my printer. I then cleaned the nozzle areas (not the nozzle plate) put it back in and I still get the same message. I read over my manual and it was no help. The warranty is up. I seriously want to throw it in my pool! I've read all of the answers here regarding to this but none have the same problem as mine.

Can anyone help? Should I get a new printer. Or should I buy bite the bullet and spend $20 on new ink?

Update:

Do you know if I re-install the printer if it will give me the same message?

go to hp utilities maintenance in click replace the color ink because when you turn off the printer that not finished printing it save to his memory. try also to remove the driver of hp and re install again if still not working you have no choice but to buy a new ink.
