The Pythagorean theorem is: the sum of the areas of the squares of the two legs of a right triangle is equal to the area of the square on the hypotenuse.

    In algebraic terms:

    a^2 + b^2 = c^2

a and b are lengths of the legs of a right triangle, c is the length of the hypotenuse of the right triangle.
