Is there any hope for my transmission?

Two weeks before we planned to buy a new car- it seems my car has died. Yesterday I let my husband drive my car. When getting onto an onramp for the highway he floored the gas and the RPMs went very high. Then on the highway, the car would not shift and since then has slipped in and out of gear. I picked up some of that tran-x that you put with the transmission fluid to stop transmission slippage. It is supposed to work "immediately". Well, we put it in, let the car idle for a while- then took it out for a drive on three occasions. Each time for about 5-10min and the car changes gear 3 times and then falls out of gear- with the RPMs just jumping as you drive.

It's a 96 Saturn SL, the transmission was completely replaced (not rebuilt) at 65k miles, the car now has 140k miles and really needs and oil change.

Update:

I suppose I need to know: is there anything else that we can do to fix this on a temp. condition? At least until I have the money for a down payment on another car and so I don't have to tow this one to trade it in? Until yesterday, my car has never shown any signs of transmission problems.

My advice is not to let your husband near any car of yours in the future.

There's usually a 3 year, 75,000 mile warranty on new remanufactured transmissions. Yours should't be failing yet. The shop technician can tell if serious decomposition of the friction clutch material has occurred when he removes the transmission's drain pan. You may have an external filter on your transmission that you could easily replace. It looks like an oil type filter. You should also have the OBD-II computer error codes read out of your computer, because there may be a transmission related code set that can help you diagnose the problem. However only the GM Saturn dealer has an OBD-II "Enhanced" scanner for sure that can read out all the manufacturer specific error codes. So I would pay the dealer for a diagnostic assessment of the problem first and ask about the warranty if that's where the transmission was replaced.
