Home Network, Need Help?

A friend recently purchased an xbox and wants to connect it to the net, he currently has a broadband connection that uses an ADSL modem that connects to his PC via a USB port. I know he needs to add a Router into the mix but how can he if his modem use's USB istead of the normal RJ45 connection?

On the modem there are various options like you can connect the Internet through RJ45. For that you need a special kind of modem which can connect through USB. You need to install drivers for that modem.

You might want to consider purchasing a combination DSL modem / switch like a Linksys BEFSR41 or a DLink DSL-2640B. This would replace your ADSL modem, so it is important that if you choose this route that you get all of the DSL settings from that modem, as you will need them on the new one. If you don't want to go this route, have you looked at your existing ADSL modem to see if it only has the USB port? Many of them also come with an Ethernet port, in which case you would just need a small switch. (You would connect the modem, computer and XBox to the switch.)
