How do I get my dog to stop crying in the car?

I have a 3yr old Border Collie/Rottweiler mix who cries every time we take her anywhere in the car. She loves to go places and will happily get into and out of the car, but as soon as the car starts to move, she starts to cry and whine, not stopping until the car stops (even through an hour-long ride). She has done this since she was a puppy, and the vet told us she would grow out of it, but that hasn't happened, although it has become more of a steady whine than a full-out cry over the years. Other than this, she is a fairly well-behaved dog.

We have tried everything we can think of with minimal success. The only thing that has had any success so far is to run her until she is exhausted before putting her in the car (not so great when you want to take her to do an outdoor activity or have a long drive ahead). Any suggestions??

Start taking her on short trips, i mean really short. Around the block to start with then increase them in length every week or so. If she doenst mind getting in the car then you dont really have to worry about getting her exited to go. Make sure she has a blanket to lie on or her favorite toy with her to make her comfortable. Also letting her sit in the car while its parked in your drive way with the door open may help as well. If she gets really worked up you can try giving her benadryl to help calm her but some dogs push through that. Benadryl goes by weight 1mg per pound and they come in 25 mg tabs. So if she weighs 50lbs she gets 2 tabs and so on.

    Dog Cries In Car

It sounds like he may have a good chance. Sometimes they luck out and only get banged up a little. Although you should probably still be prepared for the worst. I had a friend who's dog was hit by a car, two of it's legs had to be amputated because the bones had been shattered and couldn't heal, but it was still able to run around on the two legs that it had left (which I still find to be amazing) and it lived a really good life even after that kind of trama.

Your dog, may just possbily have anxiety about the motion of the car. My friends dog is the same way. I would definitely try putting her in a crate that you cannot see through..such as the Vari Kennel, not the wire crates. It may feel more den-like and homey. She may relax a bit more. Also, try putting some toys in the crate, and making sure it's as comfortable as possible. You can also usually get a presciption of something to ease her anxiety of the car ride, although i dont usually recommend that for everyone, but it seems as though she has done it for a long time. good luck.

I would guess that while your dog doesn't get sick enough to vomit, the car ride does upset it's stomach somewhat. The dog doesn't feel well and therefore it whines.

Give the dog a Dramamine tablet 30 minutes before the car ride and see if that doesn't make a difference. I would bet it does because it would keep the dog's stomach from getting queazy.

Try taking along a favorite toy or the pet mat. I was going to suggest he would outgrow this problem but your vet. thought so as well. My pet dog would always vomit when he started riding in the car but soon mastered that, now he enjoys riding in the car, I have no other suggest. Best of luck.

sounds like she may be scared in the car. I would buy her a special toy that is only used in the car. not to be taken out of the car to use anywhere else. Make her a soft bed, give a bone to chew. Treat her kindly and allow her her own space and comfort. Bring some treats along.

It's very unusual for a dog to be fearful of riding, but your dog seems to be expressing a fear through whining. I know of Border Collies that have to be active while riding, such as moving back and forth, but have never heard of the vocalizing. This would indicate to me that the animal is under stress while riding. You might try pulling your dog in a wagon or cart to acclimate her and gradually switch to the car. She might accept it to the point that she enjoys riding with you.

I'm doing basic obedience right now. My trainer hasn't once handled my dog. He has shown me how to handle my dog by using his own dog but that's about it. The reasoning is that I need to learn how to do these basic corrections and what not myself. Learn more https://tinyurl.im/85Red

I have never considered sending my dog away for training. I guess I haven't found that much of a problem with him to even think about it.

Again, it may also have to do with the level of training you are looking for etc. No idea lol. I'm not a trainer. I think a first time dog owner needs to learn simple commands and how to handle their dog themselves as well.

Does she have a special bone for car rides? Maybe a special toy, probably without squeeker :)~ Have you tried to squirt her with a water bottle to discourage whining? Some dogs do like it, but you can try. Does she ride in a crate, in a seatbelt or free?
