"Bisque" in tennis... How do you employ it?

I understand that a bisque is a handicap -- one point per set. Can you describe situations when it is employed?

In my imagination, it ought to be used to equal the play between 4.5 and 5.0 players. I've never experienced a bisque offered or even discussed. Bisque is defined in the tennis encyclopedia but described adequately enough to understand fully.

Can you describe its use today?

Thanks you!

Update:

LOL! I meant to type "NOT" described adequately enough...

There is no specified situation when you must use it. It's similar to the line challanges the tour players get. You could use the bisque on the 1st point of the set or last point. So there is an element of gambling involved as to when the absolute best time to use it in any specific match.

It's used mostly in non sactioned events like pro-ams to keep matches fun and competitive(and encourages a little side betting).

It must be a very old encyclopedia you used!!

If it is described adequately, why do you have to have it explained???

You will do a handicap with the weaker player starting on 15 and the strong player on 0 (love).

Or you can have the strong player start on -30 (minus thirty) and the other player on love or 15, depends on how big the difference is...

Or you can give the weaker player a free point he can use at any time during a game, except on game point for himself.
