my mole is driving me insane!?

ive had a mole(s) in my garden for months and they completly ruined my lawn early this year.

ive bought loads of mole repellent things such as the powder that you dilute and ive even bought one of those expensive sonar sticks that you put in the ground so the noise scares them off. that worked for a while (so we revamped the garden replacing the lawn with membrane and gravel) but now he is starting to come back.

its driving me mad and would appreciate any help thanks

Depending on the size of your lawn, you may be lucky that the mole will move on to a neighbouring garden in due course.

Otherwise, if the mole seems set to stay put, or your garden is large enough that he's still on your patch even if he does travel a bit, you basically have to choose between living with him, as one of nature's lil critturs (and an admirable one at that), or catching and killing him with a trap, which is easier said than done.

If you are uneasy about trapping, I would give it a few more months, till Spring, to see whether he will move on of his own accord.

Once you decide on trapping, as you surely will if you value your garden and the mole stays put, go and get several scissor traps from your hardware store, study the instructions carefully, and if possible get some advice (even help) from someone who is familiar with the procedure. Do not use the so-called humane (live catch) traps, a quick kill is the most humane approach and scissor traps are pretty reliable. Always use several traps, as the chances of success with any one trap are limited. Only place traps in recently dug tunnels (ideally within 24 hours). You may find a 9" length of sturdy wire (such as from a wire coat hanger) useful for locating the shallow feeding tunnels - molehills themselves are generally produced from a spur tunnel and you need to locate the main tunnel from which the spurs have been dug.

When you have caught your mole, your troubles may not be over, as, although moles are fiercely solitary, neighbouring moles may quickly move in to your mole's vacated territory (I once caught five moles in the same place in one week), so keep traps in place and remain alert to activity for several weeks. It may be that in your area you will always be liable to reinvasion, so keep the traps.

Some defensive tactics are possible - I have had some success in deterring moles by putting in daffodil bulbs along vulnerable boundaries (leave no more than 3-4" between bulbs). I have also successfully protected important shrubs by burying a 2' barrier of rabbit wire around the plants.

A mole trap from any reliable hardware shop or garden centre is your best bet. Alternatively a pest control company could gas the little sod for you. Expect to pay about £150 for this option.

Don't take Sonny's advice you could kill yourself.

Moles have an excellent sense of smell and detest anything 'nasty' in their runs.

I put firelighters (unlit) in the runs, they hate it and move on. The smell from the firelighters last for a long time so it tends to be quite a while before they come back again.

I believe that moles eat grub worms, so your problem might me the grub worms. If you get rid of those, the mole will not have a food source and move on.

Just go to the Doctors and get it removed....don't be embarrassed that it's in a private area like your Lady Garden....just get it out of the way already.
