HDTV or not HDTV?
ok, so I have had my 42" sumsung rear projection TV for about 2 years now and my 360 for about a year. I have had it connected to the tv by the scart socket for the whole time I have had it and have had to put up with blurred corners on the screen. Yuck!!
I have known since I bought the TV that it had component sockets on the back but until reading some of the stuff on here I have not thought much about it. I have been meaning to try connecting the xbox to the component sockets for ages but couldn't be bothered to drag the TV out and fiddle.........Until last night that is.
I hooked it up and flicked the selector switch on the lead to HDTV and on it came. I could only see the piture on the lowest HDTV resolution 480p or something like that but its still miles better.
So my question is, is this true HDTV or is it a sort of "virtual" HDTV. And now I have my TV working like this is there anything I can do short of a new TV to improve the picture further?
Have tried scaling the resolution higher than 480p but I dont see any picture and it eventually reverts back to 480p, so if I buy a HDMI cable will i be able to scale it up or is this as good as it will get?
keep in mind that the TV is NOT HD ready

You said your TV is NOT HD ready, therefore there isn't anything you can do to improve the picture beyond what you currently have it set at, 480p, except of course, purchase a new tv.

All your original Xbox games will be upscaled to the HD resolution supported by your HDTV (that is 720p or 1080i/1080p). All your Xbox 360 games are in High Definition already, if it's natively programmed for 720p your Xbox 360 will still upscale it to 1080i/1080p if your HDTV supports it (unless it's like Virtua Tennis 3 which is natively 1080p where it may be scaled down to 720p or 1080i to your HDTV's spec.).
However, before any of this happens you have to go to the System Blade on your Xbox 360 dashboard and select Console Settings where you will find Display. From there choose the Resolution which your HDTV can support. You may find it's still stuck on 480p from when you originally use the SCART connection.
Also check that some 1080p televisions will not accept 1080p over component in which case your only option will be to use HDMI if you want 1080p, but 720p is still a vast improvement (it's what I chose to use because the games I play are programmed in the resolution natively).
Hope this helps!

720p/1080i/1080p is HDTV
420p is EDTV. Not nearly as good as HDTV
As for improving the picture, get a new TV :)

480 is not high def. It's standard def with progressive scan, which will help a bit with the fast action screens (less tearing).
