Did anyone see Modano's phantom helper?

Modano was awarded an assist on a play where he never touched the puck from face-off through to the score. To add more eggs to the omelette, the DALLAS arena announcer claimed the assist gave Modano the American-born point record.

The guy's 2 points away from passing Housley, never touched the puck and suddenly it's "ta-da, woo-hoo, go Modo go"?

The hometeam Fox guys were stammering and Modano looked embarrassed on the bench, but the assist was rightfully taken away after the game. This obviously won't take the lustre off of the achievement once Modano gets there but, man, what a circus!

What's my point? This is the type of yo-yo nonsense that makes the NHL come across like a gong show. Am I over reacting?

Update:

Lubers, flashing the union card? lol I've seen helpers awarded off of noggins and keesters, but never when a guy didn't even touch the puck between whistles. Furthermore, these guys have video if there's any doubt or confusion, right?

To be honest, my first reaction was that the flub came from the off-ice officials, but then I said "wait a minute" and just ended up blowing a fuse over the whole thing.

I saw it, and I thought it was good of Fox to replay it and show that Modano DID NOT touch the puck at all. It took a lot longer to get corrected than I thought it would because 2 hours after the game, NHL.com was still showing Modano as having an assist.

Makes life tough for us guys who live and breathe Excel sheets for stats.

Honestly, I think you are over reacting a little bit. This is a pretty common practice in the NHL but rarely draws much notice. Given the circumstances, it is being brought into focus. The goals and assists announced over the PA system typically come from the officials. The goal gets reviewed afterwards and corrections are made as needed.

Speaking as an official of college and junior hockey, it is a very common practice for us to ask players for assists and in some circumstances even goals for the simple fact that we are not expecting a goal and lost track, we couldn't see it or we just haven't got a clue who actually touched the puck.

The same thing happened to Mats Sundin! he never touched the puck and they awarded him the all time maple leafs point record, but Mats (like a real man) went out to the ref during his applause and said "Hey, I never touched the puck" so they reviewed it and it got taken away from him, just for him to go score a goal and get the point and goal record.

Maybe he looked at the puck in a way that implied intent to touch it.

Honestly, I've heard of strange scoring goings on in the league for a long time. Both Pittsburgh and Edmonton were accused of adding second assists on goals during the Lemieux and Gretzky years that were supposed phantom touches as well.

I blame the scorekeeper just trying to give Modano a boost I guess. Announcers always go overboard, except for my man Joe Beninati.

Modano even said he didn't touch the puck, then the assist was taken off.

I wouldn't get too excited one way or the other. I'm sure somewhere along the way he probably deserved an assist he wasn't awarded. If it was actually to set the record, they probably would have taken a closer look, to make sure, before announcing it.

  • There is only one person who absolutely cannot be blamed in this - Mike Modano. We all know he will legitimately pass Phil Housley soon enough.

Yeah there was a little roundheaded ghost like figures and they had names on their chests which said; Not Me", "Ida Know", "Nobody", "O Yeah!" and "Just B Cause"

Yeah I know, you are right they were so desperate to make ratings they lost the game some where.

    Makes me crazy
