Tips on choosing a kennel/ boarding facility?

I need to find a kennel/ other overnight boarding facility for my dog. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just clean, safe and responsible. I've never done this before, so thought I'd tap into the advice and wisdom of everyone here!

What sort of questions should I ask?

What should I look for?

And, if you have any recommendations in the Brooklyn NY area, please let me know!

Thanks, as always, guys!

Update:

I should have said before - I wouldn't dream of putting my dog anywhere I hadn't personally inspected! But just bc a place LOOKS clean and the staff SEEM friendly doesn't mean it's the best place for my (or any other) dog.

Update 2:

Bossoli - pet-sitting is something that I have considered. Any tips on how to know that (I'm going to be blunt here) a complete stranger is trustworthy in my home, not just good with my dog? Are there accredited pet-sitters, for example? Thanks! (Hope you see this, lol)

Ask your vet for recommendations. Visit as many places as you can before making a decision. Ask if they have someone on premises 24 hours. Do the dogs get to run or are they strictly kenneled...things like that.

first off, stay clear of any kennel that leaves the dogs in runs the entire time. find a kennel that specializes in having a facility where dogs can play all day instead of sitting in a kennel. the top poster is right. most dogs hate kennels, b/c it means no/minimul human or dog interaction. with over 100 dogs usually in one faciility, they all feed off of one another's anxiety and all get worse and worse the longer they are there. but there are kennels that believe that this is wrong, and that dogs should not be taken from the family envrironment and placed in that situation. ask to tour whatever facility you might like. i suggest asking friends, fellow dog owners, your vet, etc for recommendations. when you see the place, they should have seperate yards for small/large dogs, play should be supervised, and most of all the staff should look like they are enjoying what they do. the dogs should also look like they are happy. the kennel i work at is an "interactive" kennel, and no dog ever suffers from seperation anxiety longer than a couple hours. we treat the dogs like our own pets. most of these places are also quite affordable (considering that most other places charge extra for things like walking/ petting/playing/etc).

EDIT just wanted to add on to the poster below. any kennel that lets dogs out together (supervised or not) should not accept unaltered pets, for this very reason. a good kennel would not want that kind of liability. The kennel i work at has anywhere from 5-35 dogs at a time. we have never had a fight in the three years it has been open. if two dogs seem to have it in for each other, they get seperated, and usually the one who starts it is not welcomed back. we screen every dog that comes in and if they are aggressive, they are not accepted. we have also done the same for dogs who are severelly untrained, or have a huge barking problem. while i do recommend a kennel where your dog can play all day and be happy (dogs are not happy sitting in a run with minimum human/dog contact), i also suggest taking great care to make sure the owners take the extra steps and time to make sure of the dogs safety.

You should always ask to see the facility. If they make up an excuse why you can't see the back, that is a definite warning sign. Kennel runs should always be clean and it should not smell.

How many time do they go outside and for how long? Where do they go outside? How will they handle an emergency. Is someone there at all times? Can they feed the dog at your usual times? Does the staff socialise with the dog? Is the staff friendly? Do they offer bedding?

My best advice is tour each individual kennel so you could see for yourself.

  • Look through your local directory, my aunt is a pet-sitter and actually went to a special school for pet-sitting and training, I cant remember what it is called.

Ask friends if they ever had someone watch their pet get names and if all else fails a boarding kennel. But make absolutely positive that they do not let any of the dogs run together, theres a horrible boarding kennel in my area that someone got their dog back from and it had part of its ear torn because it got in a fight and there are 4 fenced in acres that the owners and employees dont watch. I know of people who took dogs to a kennel and the girl came back pregnant because either some teenage employees thought it was funny or because of negligence. I worked at an excellent boarding kennel that had at most 24 dogs seperate runs one dog out at a time with some individual attention it wasnt fancy but we never had any fights, breedings, or escapes.

Go to the facility you are considering at about 8 am. If there is a big nasty mess, leave. If the staff is cleaning, feeding, and exercising then ask for prices & more details. If any place ever denies you access to see the kenel area, RUN.

Pet Sitters are great. Make sure you get a licensed & bonded one in and relax, because your pet will be.

I recommend against using a boarder. Dogs really don't enjoy the experience. Most come home sick and dirty and don't eat the entire time they're there. I'm a professional pet sitter- I can tell you with all sincerity that I care about the pets I take care of and want them to be happy. I believe you're much better off with a pet sitter because your dog will get individualized attention from someone who enjoys their job.

    Add:

There are certified and accredited pet sitters, but it's not really necessary to demand this. You can go to the Pet Sitters International website and find a pet sitter in your area. They also have a description of what you should look for when interviewing a pet sitter. Many people insist on hiring someone who is bonded and insured- but this isn't completely necessary either to get a good sitter- as long as you get someone who does it full time and it's their own business, the person should care enough about their reputation to want to to a good job. You can also to pet-sitters.biz (they have a lot of listings) to find someone nearby. Try calling or visiting grooming offices, vet offices and pet stores- pet sitters usually distribute their business cards at these places. Make sure whoever you hire provides you with several references.

    Good luck!

You should definitly look at the facility where your dog will be staying. Make sure it looks clean, try to watch how the help handles the pets. Ask what the daily routine is.

Visit few of these places in your vicinity WITHOUT an appointment, and see the reality.

Look for filth and the way the staff interact with the animals.

4 out of 5 of these places will SUCK!!!!!!

    Best of luck!
