How do I keep my house from smelling like cat urine?

When my cat uses his litterbox to urinate, the smell is strong and the whole apt smells like cat urine. He's never been fixed. He has an "enclosed" litterbox with filters, but that smell still goes thru the apt. Its a sickening smell and its embarrassing. I change his box daily also. I use Fresh Step litter. Its that when he pees, its a strong smell, and he doesn't always "cover" his pee with the litter. He just goes in his litterbox, pees and leaves. Can anyone tell me what can I do to keep my house from smelling like that please?

get one of the little oust airfreshner thingies. it actually kills the germs that make things smell. it works great near my cats litter box. i also have a can of oust spray for any odd smells around the house. i love this stuff. we even use it at the hotel i work at. it actually works.

Get your cat fixed. That will be the best and biggest thing that you could do. He could also be marking his territory. We have 3 males and 3 females. They are all fixed. The males don't have that strong odor like they did. Another thing you could possibly do is get one of those Litter Maids that automatically gets rid of the waste right after he is done since you said he doesn't cover up. I also like using the Arm and Hammer cat litter deoderizer sprinkled in the litter. If you don't want to go to the expence of a Litter Maid, I would have one of those covered litter boxes. Some of the new ones now have a filter on the top. You could also use one of those air freshners that release in your bathroom area.

Since we have so many cats, this is how I solved the litter box problem. We have a cat door that goes into a dog kennel. We have a ramp that goes down to a picnic table. Under the picnic table we have 3 under the bed storage containers with litter. I go out there every day and scoop up the litter and have no odors in my house any more what so ever. Now All I need to do is hang hairball bags around their necks to avoid that problem and shave them so they don't shed. lol

Well I don't have that problem but try switching to a litter brand with baking soda mixed in, also try moving the litter pan to the bathroom instead of a room and get your cat fixed it'll help some with the smell. You can try getting a air purifer as well and maybe spray something for pet smells themselves like they sale in petco or petsmart.

Also if the smell is that strong he could be spraying and marking around the apartment when you aren't there or don't know it.

That happend to me when my kitty eats to much fish in his diet.....I put one of those car refresher things on the littler box handle..worked for me.I also move the littler box to my bathroom into the bathtub or shower...I also add baking soda to the litter as an extra.Make sure the litter pan plastic had no urine residue (is like hard water) this smells strongly.Fresh step is a great brand to stop this ,good choice :)

Grass usually helps sweeten the smell. Sounds like you have an indoor cat, so go to the pet store or walmart and buy some cat grass in a pot, and allow the cat to eat a little bit everyday. That will help cut the odor down to a managable level.

If you're there try to clean the box as soon as he pees. Wash the walls and floor around it with a lemon or orange scented cleaner. And give him some cat grass, you can get it at Petco or at a Wal-mat. You really should get him fixed that would also help.

My cat goes on her cat porch! So, I know how you feel. There is a cat littler for multiple cats and one with odor control. Have you tried multiple cat litter boxes or baking soda mixed into the litter?

There is, frankly, very little short of a skunk that has such a clinging, pungent odor as cat urine. Air odor eliminators help for a short amount of time. A website called drs foster and smith (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/) offers a lot of remedies, and my sister (who rescues cats) has tried them all with little success. Getting your cat neutered may help, but unlikely it will totally eliminate the problem. Good luck in solving this one. I really feel for you.

If you check with some of the pet stores, there are things you can add to your cat's diet. Here is one link to a digestive aid: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display... -- check out other things on their website too.

Also, check out the article below for additional odor control assistance.

Get a female cat. Try expensive kitty litter.
