Is time to for America to leave Europe, South Korea and Japan?

The American government is spending hundreds of billions of dollars to protect Europe, South Korea and Japan from the threat of a communist invasion (or in terms of Germany and Japan to keep these nations from rebuilding their military strength). Should we give these nations notice that we will no longer be spending our hard earned money on their protection while they become richer and richer? Is it time to close our bases in Okinawa, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, and Turkey? Is the cost now outweighing the benefit?

Update:

Ben...I disagree with you.

I would hate to think that we are remaining in Europe because Hitler was in power over 60 years ago. That seems like a waste of money and resources.

My problem with the bases in Europe is that I don't think America needs to be the policeman of the world anymore.

As for North Korea, the only way they will become a threat to the US is if they first conquer South Korea and Japan. Let those nations protect against that, not us. We have our own problems.

Update 2:

One more thing Ben. I was stationed in Britain in the early 90s (at Upper Heyford near Oxford). I realize why we are there better then most. I just think it's time for us to leave. The US can still protect our allies without having to be on their soil. We now have bombers and rockets that can strike any nation in the world.

Now why would we want to protect Europe or Asia? That wouldn't affect us... I see your point. If Hitler had conquored Europe, it would have not mattered much to us at all, right?

    yeah.... no.

Do you seriously think North Korea is no threat to the U.S.? North Korea alone justifies the U.S. forces in Korea and Japan.

No matter your opinion on Iraq, currently we are there, and we need forces nearby for support. Germany and Italy provide that support. Actually in recent history, with Italy's permission, our main base in Italy DOUBLED in size strictly because of Iraq. Italy is also home to SHAPE which we are an intregal part of. That would kind of be like of the UK said "because we don't want to spend our resources, we are going to withdraw our ambassadors from the UN." They would lose their voice in the organization.

Our forces in Great Britain aren't there to function as you are implying. Our forces in the UK are there to honor our alliance and to further integrate the two militaries.

Well the problem is that the United States is currently involved in a couple of conflicts in Asia and requires staging areas to keep those efforts supported. The United States has steadily been pulling out of Germany, and relocating to Romania and Bulgaria. The United States has also been slowly pulling out of the Western Pacific. The US no longer has a permanent presence in the Philippines.

The countries that currently have permanent US forces within their borders have the advantage of not having to spend the money on their own militaries and can focus more on their civilian population (Germany has managed to be top ranking for military equipment AND civilian technology, especially chemicals and automobiles).

South Korea is getting irritated by the US presence and their own technology is far superior to that of North Korea, but their military is far smaller.

Maybe America should have not even step on their soil. But America has her own interest imagine losing this markets to China and Russia, our medium scale industries could have not existed without the reliable but cheap machines from Korea and japan In fact we could not have landed in moon without Japanese technology. We also benefited from their technology and culture, they were and still ahead on maser, laser, alternative medicine, electronics, metallurgy, microbiology, robotics, martial arts etc. So why lose friends, protect them. We are already there and its not our generations fault, let's make the best of it. So my answer is no.

If we were really worried about the communists invading anywhere, we'd stop enriching them by buying their lead and melamine soaked products. Those bases strategically protect America and support our treaty-based alliances. And while you may not realize it, we are every bit as wealthy as any European country.

if we do that, that would be like stepping down as a superpower, the reasons isnt just about protecting them(they could do it on their own) you see if we have a base in a country that means we have power over that area

say we have this base in Japan, then that would be a strong presence of us in the Pacific, it means if crap happens we have this area "under control"
