Neither, unless one spouse stayed home to take care of the house/kids during the marriage, then they should receive enough money to establish a life for themselves and get on their feet....nothing more.

No I do not think men or women should recieve it. Assets are divided in half in most cases even if one spouse actually attained the majority alone. I also think child support has become insane. I have custody of my son and signed a note stating that I would NEVER take child support from my ex even though I am just a working class cat. I dont say people shouldnt get child support only that it is often excessive of what it truly costs to raise a child and just as often the recipient uses the money for non child expenses like personal entertainment and clothing etc- NOT mortgages etc which is obviously fair.

You get divorced- then go out and earn your OWN living

wouldn't that depend on who filed for divorce and for what reason?

If the wife caught hubby cheating and she filed- she should get alimony or if wife was cheating and hubby filed- he should get alimony

It's not just as simple as man or woman- there are other factors that determine alimony payments

Whoever is taking care of the children, therefore, the custodial parent. She/he will have to work, get babysitters, attend school meetings/PTA, go to events, drive them around, take care of their birthdays, holidays, feed and clothe them. Raising children is very expensive, it requires a lot of attention, consistency, caring, time and of course money. Even with child support it doesn't even come close to what it really costs to raise children. Unless they have shared parenting, the cost and time is unbelievable.

i think it depends, if a woman needs it for health reasons or just to survive she should get it. the same with a man. it depends on the circumstances
