Is there a difference between a liberal and a progressive?
Practically no politician running for national office these days will identify themselves as a liberal. But plenty have adopted the label, progressive. Is there a difference between a liberal and progressive? Is it simply that the term liberal has been so vilified in the media that even liberals don't want to use the term so they call themselves progressives? Is this all about semantics? Is there any difference between a liberal and a progressive?

They can put Lettuce growing, community volunteer, hybrid driving mother earth, legal aid can collector on the ballot for all I care! Progress means that one day a cave man got his fill of meat then let it spoil. A progressive came along and realized that if your salt cure the meat it will last a lot longer. I am sure he was touted as a liberal or whatever but eventually the idea caught on. Yesterday's liberal ideas become progress and further humanity. The label is not important when you are sitting in a warm place with a full belly.

No. Being a progressive means advocating change and forward progress. Technically, "progressivism" is a movement that is part of the liberal ideology, though it is not specific to any particular political party. (Teddy Roosevelt, a Republican, was one of the pioneers of the original progressive movement occuring between the late 19th-early 20th centuries.)
The reason why liberal is such a dirty word is due to the demonization of the term by neoconservative pundits who intentionally and incorrectly equated liberalism with socialism and communism. Also, due to the desire to rid of "politics as usual" along with the growing frustration with the lack of emphasis of civil rights and protection in an increasingly globalized society, there is a growing interest in renewing a progressive movement relevant to today's social climate.

they call themselves progressive because they are looking for change progressive comes from progress and is not exclusive to liberals I'm a Canadian and we have progressive conservatives in power right now after we had liberals for 12 or 14 years so it's used by Democrats to stay away from the scary word liberal over here conservative is the scary word

They're the same thing, it makes it sound so much nicer, since most of the nation would not vote for a self-identifying liberal

Yep...I'm a left-leaning, progressive Democrat. The words are pretty interchangeable and mean about the same thing. The only difference is in how far left.

Semantics exactly...Socialist = Liberal = Progressive. Akin to attempting to put enough salt on a piece of spoiled meat to make it more palatable to the easily deceived.

I think "Progressives" do not care as much about civil liberties as "Liberal" do. They agree on economic issues and civil rights,

Liberals call themselves progressives to make it more palatable, much like a liar calls himself an extrovert with a lively imagination....

Liberal is what a neocon calls a Democrat. Progressive is what a Democrat may call themselves.
