Is it normal to have a blood white cell count 9K - 9.5K?

Update:

Whenever my doctor tests my blood and does a CBC it comes back between 9000 and 10,000, 10K being the upper limit. When I take strong antibiotics, it comes down to 4500 - 5000, and I feel great. But otherwise there are no symptoms other than the high white count.

Normal white blood cells count is lower than 10K (or less than 10.5/microlitre) Higher than that can indicate an infection or inflammation, but, there is another test called a differential that looks like other various white blood cells- and thepercentage of those cells can give valuable insight into the body function. Just because overall WBC are normal doesn't mean one of the individual white blood cells is showing an abormal elevation: even then tho, the differential by itself doesn't mean much: symptoms matter too.

It is a time-assured adage in medicine: treat the patient not the blood values.

Having a low WBC count opens you up to the possibility of infection- white blood cells protect you by being the army that knocks out organisms that can cause you harm. It may only seem that you feel better after a course of antibiotics that lowers your WBC count- in reality, you are at risk, first, from not having enough protection and second, from taking antibiotics you may not need. You might be feeling better because of something else entirely different- for example, maybe you were unwell, got the antibiotics, and the antibiotics killed the organism, making you feel better... and lowering your WBC (because of the action of fighting the organism).

Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can lower your resistance to some organisms like Claustridium Difficile... can cause your normal intestinal flora to be disrupted, resulting in diarrhea and cramps, loss of fluid, etc.

Your WBC count at 9-9.5K is normal. Lower than this is not "better"; and it may be more dangerous.

Here are the normal blood values for a complete blood count if you are interested:

Normal range for a white blood cell count is anything between 4,500-10,000 white blood cells per microliter, so your count is in the normal range.

Your white blood cell count also tends to be higher in the afternoon than in the morning, and is age-related as well.

There are many other things that can increase you WBC as well: stress, eating, physical activity, and many drugs.
