Planting a tree is supposed to help save the planet, right?

I'm wondering how celebrities planting trees in pots along city streets, or anyone else for that matter who plant trees for the environment, are going to help anything. Weren't the trees already growing? Aren't they just transplanting trees? I don't see anyone putting tree seeds in the ground. The mere act of planting a tree is just that...an act.

Update:

Yeah, yeah, yeah...we have trees where I live too. But I still fail to see how moving a tree from one place to another has a positive impact on global warming. Talk all you want about photosynthesis and removing carbon dioxide from the air, I understand that process. But if you have Tree X in location 1, and you move Tree X to location 5, you haven't made any progress in saving the world. In fact, the energy consumed to relocate that tree probably leaves you with a net negative environmental advantage, at least for the next several years until the tree matures.

Trees make an urban environment better. They clean the air, provide shade (which, when they're tall enough, keeps homes in their shelter a little cooler in summer, and more sheltered from wind in winter). They beautify an urban landscape that can get very gray. Do they matter to people? You bet they do. When I lived in New York, I was a volunteer licensed to prune and care for street trees (it took a 6-week course to get certified, and if I could find my course book, I could probably come up with a few more reasons why trees are worthwhile in cities, because that was covered on the exam). I used to joke that you could mug someone's granny on the street and people would walk on by, but if you were sawing on a tree to repair a broken branch, you'd get all sorts of people asking you just what you thought you were doing.

And yes, moving trees elsewhere creates demand, so nurseries keep planting trees. There's not a finite number of trees in the world.

Don't let anyone try to fool you that planting millions of trees is the solution to global warming and that cutting trees stops CO2 from being removed from the environment. All trees will indeed remove CO2 from the environment, BUT when these trees fall and decompose, they return all of the carbon back to the environment and we end up where we started. Some people might say, "turn trees into paper." That won't work either, because, unless we put all paper, cardboard, etc. in an airtight container and not allow it to decompose, then it will still return all the carbon. One real solution is to turn it into furniture, but how much furniture can we made before everyone owns 18 dressers? So, in short, trees do remove CO2 in the short run, but unless we are going to sequester EVERY SINGLE TREE and not allow it to decompose, then we are right back where we started.

These people talking about nurseries are the people who have global warming all wrong. We can't keep looking for short term answers to a long term problem. Finally, unless all of these celebrities plan on keeping these trees alive for 1000 years, then they aren't stopping global warming, they are only trying to make themselves look good for the public.

You have brought forward important questions for celebrities and others to consider. There is nothing wrong with planting trees but why rip them out in the first place?

When we do development, we literally scrape the ground of anything living and then put up dead absorbent building material.

I have birds nesting, visiting and an eco system going on in my trees, ripping them out and putting up a few trees is environmentally ridiculous.

Your trees are very very important and are keeping your buildings compliant with code. Go to http://www.thermoguy.com/globalwarming-heatgain.ht... and see information that wasn't available before. Look at a tree providing shade and outside the shade, the building is 100 degrees hotter.

Educate them and good question to keep them honest

We have planted thousands of trees with the schools ,that came from nurseries, that grew them from seed and kept them until they were at least one years old .to nurse them ,with extra care until they were strong and big enough to go it alone

If left in the nursery ,where there are thousands of little trees grouped to together ,the trees cannot develop properly ,

So we got kids to transplant them in locations where there were no trees .

This turns places with out trees in to places with trees and so helps the Environment ,Is this so hard to understand.

The trees people plant come from nurseries ,including the trees from celebrities.

if you just put a tree seed into the ground ,a bug or a chicken.or something will destroy it way before it is big enough to go it alone, and in the initial stages the tree lings need regular water and a very controlled environment

Hence the nurseries .just that they came in pots already tells you that they came from one of those.

in forests trees do not grow in pots ,believe it or NOT

the 1st step in determining no remember if or no longer a carbon project has legitimately extra approximately the alleviation of tangible, measurable, everlasting emissions is to understand the sparkling progression Mechanism (CDM) technique technique. that's the approach by using which project sponsors could submit, with the aid of a delegated Operational Entity (DOE), their innovations for emissions alleviation creation. Then, the concept of additionality addresses the question of no remember if the project could have handed off besides, even interior the absence of gross sales from carbon credit. only carbon credit from initiatives that are "further to" the corporate-as-standard state of affairs symbolize a internet environmental income. :)

well planting trees does help against global warming because the gas thta the cars provide the trees suck it up tand they reproduce oxygen and oxygen helps humanity breathe.also trees help by not causing erosion erosion is when the earth falls like what hapend in cali.

itz becuz plating those trees make space for new seeds to grow at the nursery.
