Anyone know a good steak marinade without garlic?

I'm nursing and the baby gets an upset tummy when I eat garlic...in fact, the marinade shouldn't be very spicy at all...maybe something on the sweet side would be best.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Basic marinade is oil and acid. Oil conditions the meat, and acid breaks down the tough fiber.

Acid can be vinegar, citrus juice, alcohol, or anything acidic. Since you're nursing, you might want to skip the alcohol. Try putting a little vinegar in the marinade, even some diced tomatoes would work. The remainder can be whatever you like. Try basil, oregano, chervil, thyme, etc. I like some diced onion in mine.

    Simple Garlic Steak Marinade

I always use Italian dressing, but that might have garlic in it. I've also marinated with Catalina dressing - but only chicken. My uncle grills burgers with bbq sauce on and in them. Maybe a sweet bbq sauce would work with steak as well? Or maybe an A-1 marinade? I don't know if it has garlic in it or not.

EDIT: Yeah, I've also used a can of Coke. There's enough acid in there to work, plus it isn't spicy.

    Sweet Teriyaki Marinade

    4 tablespoons sake (rice wine)

    3 tablespoons soy sauce

    3 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 tablespoons mirin (sweet rice cooking wine)

    2 tablespoons dark brown sugar

    2 teaspoons fresh gingerroot (grated)

    1. Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan over low heat and blend until sugar is fully dissolved.

    2. Refrigerate up to 2 weeks until needed.

    3. Pour marinade over meat (up to 3lbs) in a ziplock bag.

    4. Marinade for at least two hours, or up to 24 hours for a deeper, more tender flavor.

    5. Good for use with beef or chicken kabobs, grill over medium heat.

    6. Remove from refrigerator 1 hour before grilling to allow even cooking.

    7. The sugar tends to char quickly over an open flame, so brush with vegetable oil often when grilling.

    Sweet and Tangy Marinade

    1 cup soy sauce

    1 cup apple cider vinegar

    1 cup lemon juice

    1 very ripe orange

    1 tablespoon lemon pepper

1 tablespoon minced garlic, less if you don't like garlic

1 tablespoon brownulated sugar or light brown sugar

crushed red pepper flakes (not more than 1 tablespoon)

    1. In a large mixing bowl, crush the orange and put all of the pulp with the juice.

    2. Mix all of the other ingredients with the orange; blend well.

    3. Place meat or items to be marinated into a 1 gallon freezer bag.

    4. Pour marinade over the top, squeeze out the air.

    5. Marinate for at least 2 hours in the refrigerator.
