Christians - The CDC says there are about 140 million orphans in the world, what are you doing to help them?

The Center for Disease Control says there are about 140 million orphans in the world, what are you doing to help them?

Do you help these organizations are out there http://www.compassion.ca/ , http://www.samaritanspurse.ca/ , http://www.worldvision.ca,/ http://www.freedomvillage.ca/ and http://www.family.org/ too?

Hear the children of Compassion.

Luke 18:15-17 (New King James Version)

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=49&ch...

15 Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.

17 Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”

Update 2:

Beings it was asked I support and have supported all the links in the original post. I just heard of the Cry of the Orphan.

As for it being spam... get real! I am asking Christian if they are living up to what Jesus said for them to do!

As for the CDC...

http://www.cdc.gov/washington/EGlobalHealthEdition...

and a comment from elsewhere.

"CDC has identified several cross-cutting research areas that target a) the problems most affecting the world's population and b) those that disproportionately affect certain populations and communities including women, children, and persons who are economically disadvantaged. "

Update 3:

Diedre... do you math homework again.

140,000,000/6,000,000,000 = .023% or 2.3%

Or about 1/3 the population of the United States is orphans in the world!

Sad... I asked just because they keep talking in adds about Christmas is for children and these organizations are doing such good work...such a lack of empathy for those suffering. I am glad to see there are some out there. I guess the path to salvation is really really narrow!

I sponsor 2 girls through Compassion. It's ranked as one of the best charities of it's kind and has very good fiscal responsibility reports, so I'm glad to support it. Also, the president of Compassion wrote a book I liked called Too Small To Ignore: Why The Least Of These Matter Most. It's great for all lovers of children, not just those interested in sponsorship or similar programs.

Another verse I like is Proverbs 31:8-9 Open your mouth for the speechless, In the cause of all who are appointed to die. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

Edit: Can I just add in here, that I would really encourage Christians and other people living in wealthier countries to make a trip some day to a country in poverty. Growing up I always understood there were poor people throughout the world, but it didn't become a reality until I was outside my own country and saw in the same day a mom begging in the street with a newborn baby, a profoundly mentally disabled person propped up on the street with a can set by him to collect money and little children living by themselves in an alley. Opening your eyes and heart to the reality of poverty can be a life changing experience, both for you and the people you're able to help.

A lot of people do short term and long term mission trips to help others. Short term means you go and help with anything they need for a month, long term means you go and assimilate yourself into a culture, and teach abou the word. In fact, I'll be going on a short term mission trip to the Ukraine this summer =) There are also things like Operation: Christmas Gift, or whatever it's called that collects gifts for orphans in other countries.

Samaritan's Purse, yes. A handful of others, but not one consistently.

Charity Navigator is a great tool, if you want to donate, but don't want to line the pockets of the charity's CEO. It breaks down exactly where every penny goes and rates them. So don't be afraid to give, just investigate.

Just curious....is there a reason that only Christians should be helping orphans? Shouldn't people of all or no faiths help orphans too?

That actually amounts to about .003% of the world's population.

Many countries will not let Christians adopt their children. Many countries will not let Americans adopt their children. Many Christian organizations will not let non-Christians adopt their children. Many Christians fight against gays and lesbians adopting children, thinking that institutions and homelessness are better.

    And so it goes.

I've always told people who are fanatical "pro-life" supporters they have no right to say anything unless they have at LEAST ONE adopted child. Otherwise, they aren't "practicing what they preach." Those are UNWANTED children - look how many were wanted and end up in foster care and detention centers.

i am sure this is not a christain issue but i would guess we contribute more to the cause than any other religion. through tithes and direct donations. some charities take to much money to run versus how much they give from donations.

I'm rearing my own son in a Godly home, and ensuring that he has food, clothing, shelter, and lots of love.

In other words - I'm helping by not contributing to the orphan population!

Christians need to help more than just orphans. There are widows, homeless, and those who are spiritually lost. You can't just pick and choose the bible says for the church to help all in need.
