We deal with 'given situations' daily.

And we act on them daily, ignoring them is still an action - doing nothing is still 'doing'.

If we choose to become more actively involved in the situation following, Top Cats suggestions is workable.

My first thought, in line with TC, is 'do I accurately understand the situation?'

I try to view it from as many sides as possible, example, a car cuts me off. Do I understand what just happened? was the driver rude and careless? Is his vehicle giving him problems such that he had little choice? Perhaps he is in the middle of a family emergency?

Anyway, most of the time, we may not have that much time to evaluate the causes of the situation nor the effects of our actions on the situation.

I always try to make my mistakes in judgment on the side of caution, mercy, and 'is it really that significant' terms.

But, we always respond some way to any given situation. All we can do is respond the best way that we can.

study the problem, (make a list of pro's and con's of ways to solve it) that way you (might) get the best possible solution, as oppose to just doing whatever you think of first to solve it.
