home networking?

What is the easiest and least expensive way to network two home computers. I need to be able to share files and possibly share an internet connection. This is only a temporary situation, so I don't want to go to the trouble of setting up a wired or wireless router. I've been told that an Ethernet crossover cable would be one solution. Any suggestions and information would be helpful. Any detailed "how to" answers would be GREATLY appreciated.

A crossover cable would certainly do the job for you to share files, be sure to enable sharing on both computers. As far as sharing an internet connection, It is much easier to purchase a router to do the job, unless you have dial-up, then sharing a connection is not worth the aggravation (too slow!)

With a crossover cable you can transfer files but you can't share an internet connection with it. You will need a router. It's not complicated to set up

a router would allow you to do both, a crossover would only allow file transfers
