Are Christians compromising with the world in their interpretations of Genesis?

For example...I would say that most Christians today believe that the six days of creation were not literally six, 24 hour days. Each day could be a billion years.

That's nice and all, but what about this...if animals were created before man, and we agree with man's timetable (also assuming that animals like the dinosaurs became extinct before man was created), the entire theme of the Bible doesn't make sense; death would have been introduced BEFORE the fall of man, meaning that sin entered the world before Adam sinned. Genesis becomes a lie, right? And if it is untrue, how can one trust the rest of the Bible?

Some will point this out as evidence of the Bible's failure. However, I point it out as evidence of failure of Christians' faith. The evidence (scientific and otherwise) supporting a young earth is out there.

So, do you trust man's word? Or do you trust the word of God?

Update:

Thank you, all, for the wide array of answers. I disagree with most, but to my surprise, all are thoughtful. Thanks!

The story of Genesis doesn't make sense when read strictly literally. It makes much more sense as an allegory - something that represents man's relationship with God, and a symbolic representation of the origin of mankind and his place/rank in the universe.

It's not a science book. It's not a history book. It is a fine religious text written over centuries - and the old testament portion is used by Christianity, Judaism and Islam -not just Christianity.

There are many, many different interpretations of the Genesis account. All are perfectly fine. Christianity, for example, does not require one to know the correct interpretation of Genesis in order to be a Christian or be saved. Salvation has nothing to do with reading the Bible or interpreting the Bible. So, no, it's not an affront to God to take Genesis non-literally.

What IS wrong is elevating the Bible, the book, to an idol, and requiring people to worship it, as opposed to God. To say that Genesis has to be read literally or one is not "trusting the word of God" is to elevate the Bible to the status of an icon or and idol. It is not. It is a book, and God can convey truths through that book in any way he sees fit - literal or non-literal or a combination thereof.

  • Death of the animals, like the dinosaurs, does not mean sin entered the world before the fall of man. Sin by man caused the fall of man and the death of man but the Bible doesn't say anything about animals in that respect. Animals can't sin. I trust the word of God--the Bible. Thanks for the thought provoking question.

Although I have heard the argument that death did not exist until Adam sinned, I just don't see that in the bible. If animals were made and some were carnivores, then death would have existed prior to the sin.

Now, I read the bible because I believe there are valuable lessons to learn from the writings of some of these men. I also believe there are valuable lessons from other writings.

Are their flaws in the Bible? Yes, I believe so, because men are flawed and men wrote it.

Glory to the Lord ! Halleluyah! I totally agree with what you wrote by the Spirit of Truth, I believe the days of creation were six too, and yes, today unfortunately most christians are compromising with the world, but the Kingdom of liers will perish soon with the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus with God His Father, and the Kingdom of true believers shall be established forever...

In Truth we Trust !!! Of course I trust the word of God !!!

And I do not trust man's word at all!!!

The Truth is the Word of God !!!

    Be blessed.

I trust the word of God.If there were some of the bible true and some not true.Who would be

able to say what was and wasn't true? This not

only would be calling God a liar, but making man the judge.Let God's word be true and every man a liar. Also we are to stay with the

literal meaning of the bible. Those who don't

will error greatly when interpreting scripture.

  • I don't think I understand what your question is.

The six days of creation were literally six days as we know them. I have never herd a Christians say otherwise. The billions years theory was created by evolutionists to make the theory of evolution to comply with Creation.

I think your agreeing with that, so I'll skip to the last question: I trust the word of God over that of man any day.

The "Word" speaks by faith alone.

Now lets look at this, before the world, God was.

Then he created the angels after his countenance.

But he knew them, and sought another more like him

He knew them so he created man, that included the Christ.

He was pleased with him, and gave man flesh

He created the heavens and the earth as thier domicile

The first creation rebelled (Isaiah and Revelations)

They were cast upon earth, where they warred with one another.

God kept his judgement with them considering he remembered there service.

He set a new law in man to serve him alone

Satan felt the power of that word was similar to the praise

He sought after the wars on earth to collect mans souls

He sent the spirit of one of his creations to tempt Adam

God accepted believing Adam would reject the sin

His desires accepted the sin of that flesh then it took him

Then we were cast out of Eden because known were proven to be whole with God.

    Know lets look at it:

Who knows what existed on the outside of the garden

Who knows how long Adam was in the garden

What we do knew is that each beast, both seen and known were trying to shed the image of God, and recnfigured itself in battle to prove its worth. What we do know is that Adam existed in the time of God as everything outside of the Garden existed in the time of man. What we do know is that much blood was shed before the eyes of God were fixed on them. Also what we do know is that the spirit of Death was accepted by Adam when he refused to repent because he truly didn't understand God. That is why God debated with himself about destroying his creation before he looked back at Christ. It is no understatment, the bible is not confusing, its just our senses are hazed by an outside view.

Unfortunately many people believe that the earth is billions of years old. In an attempt to make that fit into the Bible, the Gap theory came about. However there is no evidence in Genesis for the gap, as there is no evidence for the billions of years. There is absolutely no proof-only speculation, and plenty of it.

God wrote the events in Genesis in such advanced scientific writings that we will be forced to reinterpret this same scripture in a scientific way as time goes by. Which is what is starting to happen now.

Who did the what now? You're still trying to rationalise the Bible based on limited concepts... in which case you will always find paradoxes.
