I think the event will be that another bonehead will pick another date that the world will supposedly end on, and people will all seem to forget that 100 dates had been erroneously picked before that.

theres no asteroid thats going to hit in 2014. the mayan calendar doesnt end. it starts a new count, which is like us changing from 2007 to 2008. sure the date changes, but that doesnt mean anything. and the egyptian calendar doesnt end, ivr never heard that and ive researchd this subject.
and as for the bible code, its all bs. a group of people did the same thing to moby dick and came up with predicted assassinations and nuclear wars.
o and as for the sun, earth, and galactic center being lined up. think about that. the sun and the galactic center are always lined up because any 2 points form a line. the earth revolves around the sun once a year, therefore intersects that line once a year. so that theory is just idiotic.

Well alot of ancient civilizations who had calandars that were far superior to the roman/present day calandar ended on this date
why they ended on this date?
the mayan had numerous calandars that ended on this date, and are used in most of the refrences, but there is actually a few civilizations that as far as historians can tell never came into contact with each other had a calandar that stoped on the same date.
it is either one of the greatest coincendeces or something more...

The Bible Code

The date 12/21/2012 also makes an appearance in the much-disputed Bible Code.
If you haven't read anything about the Bible Code I would recommend it, I'm not ready to tell you that I believe in it totally - but I will say that the Bible Code has (apparently) predicted many major events, such as assassinations of major world and religious leaders, disasters - both unpredicted and planned and many, many dates.
One of which is of course 12/21/2012.
In the Bible Code the 21st day of the 12 month of the year two-thousand-and-twelve is criss-crossed by the words "EARTH DESTROYED".
I know for a fact the Egyptian calandar also ends in 2012.

There are people who are easily taken in by charlatans. Some of them have allowed themselves to be convinced that when the Mayan calendar arrives at the end of the first (of five) Long Counts -- each Long Count lasting more than 5000 years -- something bad will happen.
It is a bit like Y2k, when our own calendar arrived at December 31, 1999 and would run out of numbers...
I also rememebr that is when all the computers blew up and we all died.

Sure - Christmas shopping, time to decorate the tree, it's a Friday so time for the first Christmas parties.
Its winter solstice, so its the longest night (or shortest day) of the year, so it will be dark early and probably cold (could have snow).
Other than that, its just another year.
