IP address problems?
My son was having problems getting to a game that he wanted to play (something to do with the router blocking) so he changed the IP address (using ipconfig) for the router to a static IP address. He says that he un-did everything, but now we can't get to anything except that particular game.
I'm not sure what he actually did. Any ideas would be appreciated. We're using a NetGear Rangemax router with a PC running Windows XP

First, "ipconfig /renew" is used when you are trying to grab an IP from the DHCP Server in the NetGear RangeMax router.
If he did in fact assigned a static IP the "ipconfig /renew" WILL NOT HAVE ANY EFFECT.
To change to a dynamic IP assignment from the router do the following:
In Windows
Start>Connect To>Show all Connections
There are several connections there related to wireless and LAN (local area network) Depending on which one you use to connect at home right click the one you connect to and select "properties" from the menu.
This will take you to the Network Settings for the specified connection.
Go to General Tab> and in the list box search for TCP/IP Protocol.
Once you have selected this option (TCP/IP) select properties button. In the next window make sure your two options selected are:
Obtain IP address automatically
Obtain DNS address automatically
Click OK, and click OK in the remaining window to close and apply changes.
Now you can use "ipconfig /renew"
Test your internet connection to see if you have it back.
If you are connecting with the wireless do all the steps above for the wireless connection under the same Network Connections area.
Good luck.
DO NOT DO A HARD RESET ON THE ROUTER AS OTHER PERSON INDICATED UNLESS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ROUTER. TO TROUBLESHOOT START WITH THE COMPUTER. YOU MENTIONED IT WORKS WITH THE GAME YOUR SON PLAYS, SO THE ROUTER MUST BE OK.

Find the instructions on how to HARD RESET the router back to factory settings (should be in the manual, if not download the manual off NetGear's website).
You'll have to put all your ISP info back into the NetGear again and setup your passwords again.
