No should be fine, in fact they sell timers to auto. turn off the heater when not needed like at night when you sleep. You may also want to invest in an insulation blanket for extra savings.

No problem, it won't hurt the water heater at all. No need to turn the water to the heater off unless you want to drain the heater each time. If I were just leaving it off for a month and turning it on for the next month, I personally wouldn't bother. You're probably not saving that much especially if it's high efficiency or a tankless model.

Before I got solar for my electric water heater I put a timer on my heater. I programed it for to heat water about 2 or 3 hours a week. When not in use turn it off. Saves money.

totally okay to turn it off at the breaker. your not doing any damage to the heater by doing this. pretty good idea on your part as it is saving you money by not heating water when the unit is vacant and hot water isnt being used.
if you really want to save more, consider upgrading to a hot water on demand system. they are more expensive than a traditional hot water tank, but over the long run you save lots of $$ cause you only heat the water when you turn on the faucet. models are available for both electric and gas applications and can be found at your local home improvement store.

Becky ... Just turn the breaker off and also turn the water off going to the rest of the trailer. That way you avoid any other potential leaks or damage that might occur. The water heater is self contained and nothing will evaporate, but since she is going to be gone, you dont need hot water. Save the money and tell her to enjoy the 3-4 months away from home.

Thats a good thing to do. Also you might want to note if you use city water or well water. The water in the tank can actually turn smelly because of the type of water and the anode. I learned this within the past year. I turned the hot water handle and the water smelled horrible. I have a link for some more information on the smelly water.

No - great idea. Just make sure you never turn on the power with no water in the tank and then add water. That's a problem.
Your idea is definitely a green idea! Good job!
