Has Massa missed the point?

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/16112007/58/massa-pr...

Poor, Felipe - he can't drive without traction control and he thinks there'll be more accidents.

Isn't that the whole point of removing driver aids? So that only the best drivers (i.e. those who can drive without the computers) will make it in F1, and those who rely on technology will fall by the wayside after a few crashes - and make things a bit more interesting for the spectators!

He's not going to be the only one who finds it difficult. I anticipate a fair few drivers sitting in the kitty litter next year. No TC will certainly show who is capable of handling the speed and will bring back a lot of what has been missing - real racing. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!

Don't read too much into a quotation stemming from initial frustration. Yes, lack of TC will be more difficult to cope for all drivers. The smoother the driver, the better the results. However, if those guys got to that level in F1 is not only by messing around with playstation. In the lower series they all have driven without computer aids. The drivers who have been in F1 for a while got spoiled and adjusted to a comfortable style of driving. Now that they have to change, they complain about it. But they will adapt. Certainly some will adapt better than others, some soon and some later. And we may see some unexpected results in the upcoming year due to these technical-electronic changes. Personally I don't see too much revolution happening, and I expect the top drivers to still be at the top, Massa included (especially if their cars are at top level). As far as crashes, isn't that a thrill that spectators crave so much? Nobody wants anybody hurt, but accidents make races more interesting. Those drivers are paid multi million dollars, pounds, euros, whatever, to risk as well. It's part of their job description. Sad to think this way, but it is true.

I don't think he can't drive without traction control. I think he proved this year that he can deliver the results, given the right equipment.

When he first started in F1, Massa had a very rough driving style. He worked the steering wheel like a maniac. I think he has corrected that.

I think Massa's point is that it is one thing to get rid of TC to give fans a better show, but it is another issue when it comes to compromising safety. It's safe to assume that the loss of TC will lead to more spins and accidents, at least early in the season, but racing can never be 100% safe.

It is going to be one of the best seasons in recent history. It means that you have to drive the car again instead of just steering it as it has been since driver aids came on to the cars.

It is ridiculous when watching the coverage when you see the telemetry readouts. All the driver does is put full throttle down coming out of turns. You then see the TC (Traction Control) light start flickering away as the car fights for optimal grip. The next step felt like the driver would be sitting in the pits and running the whole race by remote control.

The cars to beat will still be the same, but it means if you have a good driver in a middle of the pack team you have a chance. You may not win, but we may see more than McLaren and Ferrari on the podium every race.

They can't completely remove the computer aid because

,it plays major role in the safty of the driver. If you consider the average speed at which F1 car drives , you need to have electronic aid for the safty of the drivers.

Among the many of electronic aids, traction control is the only corner helping , and removing that will definitily sort the good and ordinary drivers. So they removed it to make the game more interesting .

No doubt that the massa is going to suffer in this season.

Well it's not rocket science to figure out that there would be more accidents in a wet race without TC. At least Massa admits that he knows he's no good. I am a bit impressed since after reading quotes in the news again and again of Lew basking himself in praises, reading some form of humility is a really pleasant change. But then F1 drivers are the best in the world and they are the masters at adapting. So Massa, start adapting!

Well said Mark, I fully agree. But it is not surprising that Massa spoke the way he did because he is a very untalented at best average driver who only drives because he has the backing of Jean Todt and his son Nicholas Todt. It is a sign of how F1 has lost its way when a driver like Massa not only is in F1 but finishes in the top 4 of the Championship. There is no way he should be in F1 at all.

No, he's simply the only one so far that doesn't try to look great. All the others lie because they all want to look good to the media, everyone says the change will benefit his style, will help him and so on. At the end of the day there will be winners and loosers, it just can't be everyone is winning from it.

Felipe doesn't care and speaks his mind as usual, like with Spygate he said rather indiplomatically for the british that the drivers had to be kicked out of the championship.

His performances in F3000 were awesome w/o TC and he has better car control than anyone, he's the only one who can change his lines and be all over the place and yet be quick.

The point isnt to cause for accidents, its to improve the racing. Traction control is basically like cruise control on your car. Its one less thing you have to worry about. The lack of driver aids in Formula one, will allow drivers to show their true abilities. Michael was a half of a second faster then Massa and he hadnt been in a car for over a year.

Massa could have somewhat a point, but that would be for the ones that are nothing more than no-talent assclowns, and ones that are totally unprepared for it.

Even if they are prepared for it, im sure there might be an extra spin or two compared to if there was traction control on the cars.
