External hard drive crash? What to do?

I dropped my external hard drive yesterday - it wasn't a bad fall. But the problem is, no matter what I've tried, I can't access my files anymore - I'm worried I've lost everything. I had lots of school files and thousands of pictures on there.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Do you have any ideas as to how I might rescue them?

I'd appreciate any ideas.

Hmmm...prognosis isn't good. The impact might have caused the write heads to come into direct contact with the platters. Not good. If the data are that important to you, try searching for a local service that offers data retrieval. They're good but often very expensive.

Put the drive in a different computer.

Use a good file recovery program.
