While the rest of the world use Greek alphabet in Maths & Science, what do the Greek use in their education?

Everywhere in the world, people use Greek letters to represent Science & Maths notions as to parallelize the system so that everybody learns the same thing.

To us (non Greek people), those letters are mere symbols used to represent things. However, those letters are actually used by the Greek people in everyday life.

My question is, what do the Greek use to represent Maths & Science notion in their eduacation system? Do they use Latin alphabet to replace our alpha, beta, theta etc... or do they also use the Greek letters?

That's actually a good question. Modern education systems are built on the paradigms established by the ancient Greeks. This is the main reason we continue to pay homage to those educators by utilizing the Greek characters in our studies, and even in everyday life. (Anyone not know the significance of Alpha? Beta? Omega?)

To answer your question, the Greeks still use Greek characters. No need to do otherwise, as their roots are the same as everyone elses - moreso, in fact, since they maintain the true lineage, uncorrupted by outside influences, as the rest of us are.

    Hope this helps.

    Greek Alphabet In Science

  • 1 decade ago

As correctly said before by Greek users of this community,

Greeks use Greek characters as well as Latin characters (and all the relevant greek- or latin-, mainly, vocabulary) in science, just like the rest of the world [at least the part that uses languages of european origin].

For example, the wavelength is λ, while the light velocity is c.

However, there are a few points that are worth attention:

    - In Greece there has been a tradition of the French-German scientific systems. For example, we still use the , symbol instead of the point . for numbers like 5.20, 3.14159 (pi) etc.

I have the impression that the system is beginning to change, maybe because of the great use of computers and programming that are all based on the english language (especially the american english work).

    - A big number of Greek symbols -words are another story- used worldwide do not actually coincide with the corresponding Greek words. They are symbols employed by non-Greek scientists who wanted to give a special character to the quantities they dealt with. The L sound of Length can only be represented in greek with λ. Also, the P sound of the word Product is represented by Π and so on. While we have translated functions as συναρτήσεις (something like "co-dragging/raising"), we represent them as f(..)-s. Angles are often given greek symbols, like theta and phi.

    - Greeks maintain their own pronunciation for each one of the letters of the Greek alphabet (I'm sorry not to know the evolution of the letter names to tell you more about this). We do not say "lambda", but λαμδα (lamtha, th as in the, a as in father). We also tend to mix the pronunciations of the Latin letter names, using the french or the english or else way. To name the b letter, we can say "be" or "beh".

And, yes, I suppose that using greek characters while talking science in Greek, is the same as using latin/english characters while talking science in English, German, etc.

I would like to know what the Japanese, for instance, do in such cases, having a completely different language and writing system.

Math is a language all that is very own. greater specifically, that is verbal replace, and specific concepts must be expressed as effectively as achieveable. The Greek Alphabet is used by way of fact of its distinction from the Latin Alphabet and (i think of) as style of an homage to Greek custom that have been given the ball rolling for western arithmetic. area be conscious-- maximum individuals mispronounce those Greek letters; pi, working example, is definitely reported "pee" in Greek.

We use the Greek characters indeed

but allow me to make a correction

people word while dont use Greek letters just because they want to have the same system all over (regarding mathematics and science)

but this is an honor towards Greek's Contribution to the world, because it was Ancient Greeks who - first of all - pose and stated the fundamental theories of physics and mathematics

Greek people use Greek letters too!

How could we use different symbols since they come from our own language???!!

This is happening because most of the sciences laid their foundation on greek language!
