Can people want what they want to want?

"People can do what they want, but not want what they want."

If we cannot decide our desires, and some of these thoughts can be considered sinful, does this mean that sin is not a choice, but an inevitability (for most of us)?

I don't see why you can't want what you want. As long as you realize that you won't always get what you want, and are willing to submit yourself to God's will when you find out what His will is. This of course means that if you find yourself wanting something you already know is sinful and therefore not God's will, you should not entertain that desire, but instead try to get over it.

For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."

As an atheist my desire is to believe that there is no god or gods. Since that is what I believe, there is no sin on my part. How can I sin against the non-existent?

We are born in a sinful world. Everyone born after Adam and Eve were.

You can think and want whatever you want, but you don't have to act on it. I don't think there is anything wrong with sinful thoughts as long as they stay in your head.

I'd say it was the other way around. People can want anything, but there are a lot of limits on what they can do, legally and morally.

I doubt that. If thinking of what you want is a sin, then they are trying to brainwash you.

If you really wanted to want something you would already want it so what you are talking about is more like self deception.

People can do what they want, except when wanting what they want is not what the person who they want to do it with wants what they want to do

Wanting is your wish but getting is what you deserve.
