Sgoldperson, when Mario retired the first time, he was still second. He didn't 'pass' Gretzky until Gretzky played his 1461st game 2+ years later.

However, in their first 915 games..........Mario Lemieux scored 1723 points...........Wayne Gretzky scored 2131 points...or 408 more.
