I'm a hockey guy, divorced father of 2. Played in the Chicago Black Hawks system and eventually became a scout for over 30 years. Now I just sit and watch hockey all day long (and all night).

  • Here are some hockey questions for all of you?

With the regular season ending in due time (less than 24 hours now boys and girls), here are some questions for you to ponder?

    1) Drew Stafford broke out this year with 31 goals in 62 games (that's a 41 goal pace). Fluke, or not?

    2) Sergei Fedorov started his career on fire with 6 point a game seasons to start his career before getting only 1 more in the bext 12 seasons, possibly costing him a Hall of Fame position (lower pts/game than Gilmour for example). Will Ovechkin bounce back next season, or will he pull a Fedorov the rest of his career? (the 2 Hart Trophies probably guarantee Ovechkin's place in the Hall of Fame regardless of what he does the rest of his career)

    3) Will Ilya Kovalchuk in the future be the Ilya we saw in Hotlanta and the last 40 games (38 points) this year or the Ilya we saw in the short-lived John MacLean era of the Devils?

    4) Will Corey Perry ever win another Richard Award?

    5) We saw a LOT of good rookies this season, so much so that everybody (including Yahoo! Answers participants) wants to give the Calder to somebody different (cross fingers for John Carlson). Of this year's bumper crop..................who will have the best career? Who will we be talking about in 5 years when we say...whatever happened to 'X', he had such a good rookie season?

To those who are fans of teams in the playoffs.......good luck, now the real season begins!

Lidstrom has NEVER been a '-' player in his career, don't let him be the next Jere Lehtinen!

  • Would you (as a fan) support this?

Burke also wants NHL GMs to consider squashing 5-on-3 power plays when the second penalty assessed is for delay of game (puck over glass). Burke says the general managers have never really discussed the significance of such an innocent foul and he will propose the delay of game penalty start once the first minor has expired, or a goal has been scored. In theory, Burke's amendment could translate into a four minute, 5 on 4 power play, but he believes managers would rather be a man down for four minutes instead of down two men for two minutes.

  • How long before the Florida Panthers are a powerhouse?

A few days ago I asked if Tallon was nutso, but maybe he knows what he's doing. He's saved the franchise a lot of money, grabbed a few draft picks, and picked up a some young players.......the exact same thing he tried to do in Chicago (the qualifying offer fiasco aside).

    Since January 1st

    - Tallon has traded 2 draft picks....their 5th rounder in 2011, and their 7th rounder in 2012.

    - He gained 4. The 3rd runder for the Capitals and Rangers this year, the Hurricanes 5th rounder this year, and the Canucks 3rd rounder in 2011.....so, he gained 2 draft picks this June

He acquired 11 players, while giving up only 9. So, he gained 2 players and 2 draft picks, and saved money

    Gained

    Jack Skille (RW, 23)..............$600K

    Hugh Jessiman (RW, 26).......$500K

    David Pacan (C, 19)

    Ryan Carter (C, 27).................$625K

    Alexander Sulzer (D, 26)........$650K

    Timothy Kennedy (LW, 24)....$550K

    Sergei Samsonov (LW, 32)...$2.533MM

    Evan Oberg (D, 22)................$1.563MM

    Jake Hauswirth (F, 22).............$545K

    Patrick Rissmiller (LW, 32)....$1.000MM

    Nicklas Bergfors (RW, 23).....$900K

    Gained $9.466MM, average age 25.1

    They lost

    Michael Frolik (C, 22)..........$1.275MM

    Alexander Salak (G, 24)........$1.300MM

    Stephane Bernier (RW, 25)...$2.000MM

    Cory Stillman (LW, 37).........$3.533MM

    Bryan Allen (D, 30)...............$2.9000MM

    Bryan McCabe (D, 35)..........$5.750MM

    Christopher Higgins (LW, 27)...$1.600MM

    Dennis Wideman (D, 27)......$3.9375MM

    Radek Dvorak (RW, 33).......$1.700MM

    Lost $23.955MM, average age 28.8

Lowering the average age of the team, acquiring extra players and extra draft picks, and saving $14MM can only be good

  • Is Dale Tallon nutso!?

Several years ago, Tallon mistakenly signed Samsonite baggage to a contract in Chicago, only to spend the better part of the next 4 months trying to correct his mistake. Baggage was a hard boy to trade because nobody wanted him. Tallon eventually 'lost' his baggage to Carolina.

Fast forward 3 years, and suddenly his lost Baggage has washed up on the shores of Miami Beach.

So, is Tallon nuts for re-acquiring a guy whom he tried so hard to get rid of years ago?

DWIW................Carolina has traded Sergei Samsonov (aka Samsonite Baggage) to Florida for Bryan Allen (couldn't they fit these guys into the Stillman/Carter deal on Thursday?)

    Dale...............you're killin' me!

  • Is Stephen Weiss nuts?

He's told Panthers management he'll only waive his no-trade clause to go to Toronto?

If this is true (and the source was Kypreos so take that for what it's worth).........why on earth would somebody deny themselves a chance to be a Red Wing, or a Bruin, or a Flyer, or (insert potential 2011 Stanley Cup winner here).

I think Toronto is moving in the right direction, and I still stand by playoff prediction of October.......but making the playoffs is not the same as being a cup contender.

  • Why do professional athletes tell fibs?

Last week, during an MSG telecast, Jamie Langenbrunner told Stan Fischler that despite all the trade rumours, he had no intention of waiving his no trade clause - even if it was for a contender.

    Today, Langenbrunner's a Star.

What is the biggest fib you've heard from a professional athlete not named Lebron?
