How long before the Florida Panthers are a powerhouse?

A few days ago I asked if Tallon was nutso, but maybe he knows what he's doing. He's saved the franchise a lot of money, grabbed a few draft picks, and picked up a some young players.......the exact same thing he tried to do in Chicago (the qualifying offer fiasco aside).

Since January 1st

- Tallon has traded 2 draft picks....their 5th rounder in 2011, and their 7th rounder in 2012.

- He gained 4. The 3rd runder for the Capitals and Rangers this year, the Hurricanes 5th rounder this year, and the Canucks 3rd rounder in 2011.....so, he gained 2 draft picks this June

He acquired 11 players, while giving up only 9. So, he gained 2 players and 2 draft picks, and saved money

Gained

Jack Skille (RW, 23)..............$600K

Hugh Jessiman (RW, 26).......$500K

David Pacan (C, 19)

Ryan Carter (C, 27).................$625K

Alexander Sulzer (D, 26)........$650K

Timothy Kennedy (LW, 24)....$550K

Sergei Samsonov (LW, 32)...$2.533MM

Evan Oberg (D, 22)................$1.563MM

Jake Hauswirth (F, 22).............$545K

Patrick Rissmiller (LW, 32)....$1.000MM

Nicklas Bergfors (RW, 23).....$900K

Gained $9.466MM, average age 25.1

They lost

Michael Frolik (C, 22)..........$1.275MM

Alexander Salak (G, 24)........$1.300MM

Stephane Bernier (RW, 25)...$2.000MM

Cory Stillman (LW, 37).........$3.533MM

Bryan Allen (D, 30)...............$2.9000MM

Bryan McCabe (D, 35)..........$5.750MM

Christopher Higgins (LW, 27)...$1.600MM

Dennis Wideman (D, 27)......$3.9375MM

Radek Dvorak (RW, 33).......$1.700MM

Lost $23.955MM, average age 28.8

Lowering the average age of the team, acquiring extra players and extra draft picks, and saving $14MM can only be good

Update:

Once again, Bob's network is out of touch. :)

As for Vokoun, Tallon's hands were tied as he refused to waive his no-trade clause (as did Weiss).

I also disagree with your theory on 3rd and 4th rounders.............Look at Philadelphia, over 50% of their 3rd and 4th rounders have made the NHL (average for the 3rd round is 54%, 48% for the 4th) including some decent picks like Bob Kelly, Patrick Sharp, Jimmy Watson, and Vinny Prospal.

I do agree that Sunrise is not the idea place to see a game..............palm trees should never be within 1000 miles of an NHL arena.............and that some NHLers may have been scared off in the past, but Tallon has a reputation and Vinik has the same mindset that Huizenga had - they haven't made the playoffs since he sold the team. Together I think they have a good start.

Never. Florida isn't Chicago and never will be.

He is left holding his best free agent chip and that is Tomas Vokoun, why he never traded him is beyond me. I can't imagine he wouldn't have gotten a decent offer of draft picks and prospects.

Also, let's face it, he built a one hit wonder with those bums in the Windy City and made many errors along the way which blew up in his face but they got lucky and managed one win before their firesale.

Also, draft picks aren't the end all. You need those high caliber ones and they still need to be picked correctly.........and cheating at a draft lottery here and there. I look at the history of 3rd and 4th rounders and I don't care how many you have, chances are that the majority don't become impact players.

Chicago is a big, traditional original 6 market with a big arena that has 20K+ every night. I just cannot see Florida attracting the complimentary FA's needed for the push either (your Hossas of the world).

Florida are bums. Chicago are bums. Tallon is a bum.

Source(s): My network EDIT- LITY....the key word is "impact" though. Sure, they come along now and then but more often than not they might make it as a 3rd or 4th liner, not headliners toward a cup. Also, Bob Kelly and Watson are poor examples just because they were drafted in the 30's which today would be an early 2nd rounder, not a 3rd or 4th rounder. We can't really look throughout history in that manner and compare it to today because a 6th rounder in the 70's is the same as a 3rd rounder these days. ;)

I'm not sure they'll ever be a true powerhouse, but I think that in 3-4 years, once some of the prospects and young talent they have hit their stride and the draft picks turn into NHL talent. Of course, that whole division is improving. Tampa will only improve as Stamkos gets better and some of their other guys start hitting their primes. Carolina is pretty good, when healthy, and Skinner is just going to keep getting better. Washington is Washington, and with their deep farm system may not dominate the division anymore, but will stay highly competitive for a while with the guys they have. Atlanta is tough to read, because they have some good players, but for some reason are like the NHL's version of the Houston Texans, giving their fans glimpses of hope, but just not being able to reach the next level

The Panthers will be a powerhouse once they start selling those plastic rats again!

Not to be forgotten is the series of trades that sent Nathan Horton to Boston and Florida ended up getting Nick Bjugstad (from LA's pick). Needless to say I think Mr.Tallon is doing a great job on building up a young core and clearing up a lot of cap space. As an Avalanche fan I can tell you, it is all about cap space baby! Oh and how can I forget, he drafted Erik Gudbranson with Florida's own pick, as well as Quinton Howden. So that is three first round picks last year, and considering he did a lot of moves after the playoffs but before the draft, Florida could easily stock up again this year, say Stephen Weiss maybe or someone who wants a first crack at Vokoun like Calgary did with Bouwmeester.

If you are asking for a time line, Chicago happened faster than anticipated, Colorado I think is a more reasonable pace. Florida can contend for the playoffs after one more season, and realistically make the playoffs in 2 years after that. But as for now, excuse me while I go cry over the Avs goaltending situation...

Let's take a look at what he's got.

Two young goalies in the "A" that are on the cusp of playing in the NHL. A good experienced back up goalie in Clemmenson to mentor Markstrom or Plante coming into next year. He will likely have a lottery pick for this year. So there is a blue chip prospect there.

He is starting with four young Defensemen under contract at a low price. There are no barn burners available this year as UFA's so he won't have to make the Burke mistake at the start. Overpaying for defensemen who might not help.

The team has a nucleus of a first line in Weiss, Bergfors and Booth. Add in Olesz and Dadinov and they will compete in a lot of games next year but not enough not to get another lottery pick.

So in three years they will have had two lottery picks and a pretty solid core. Pulling a rabbit or two out of the hat and It's my guess that in 2014 the Panthers will be in the playoff hunt. In 2015 they will have a powerhouse of the Detroit variety.

Source(s): Don't need a network. I remember on Monday somebody's network had Brad Richard traded three times to four different teams. That reminds me what ever happened to Eklund?

    In 2-3 years.

ok, what OKC has to do is get e greater useful commencing lineup, and then pull Lebron 2010. OKC hasn't lots stars to spend that is earnings cap on. yet another selection could be to get somebody to help out Durant, perhaps pull some string to get OJ Mayo or Marc Gasol from Memphis. those techniques are greater effective, than lebron. in the top nevertheless, it would take them approximately yet another 10-12 years in the previous they could even compete on the point Denver or Atlanta is enjoying on the 2nd.

I think it depends, and I think more moves are coming for Florida in the coming seasons.

I do think they will be a powerhouse, and I predict in three years time they will be playoff contender. Of course, that's just subjective reasoning, but that seemed to work out pretty good for my predictions of Pheonix and Chicago (although any casual observer could see that one coming).

I think in three years time, they will Division champions and a legitimate playoff contender.

I don't think they'll ever be a powerhouse. The reason is that I think that they will have relocated already by the time that happens. I'm thinking that the Panthers would move to Quebec because I'm sure that half of the people in that arena are Quebec snowbirds anyhow...lol

I expect to see improvement next season.

If I heard correctly last night, he will have

seven picks in the first three round.

Randy Moller said the rest of this

season will be like a training camp.

2 years, they're a young team on the come up right now. Very talented, if they can get a few more semi talented vets i think they will be a playoff contender next year.
