toddlers with milk alergies?

my daughter is weeks away from her 1 year b-day. she has been on lactose free milk based formula since i stopped brestfeeding her a few months ago. now that she is almost a year old we decided to try whole milk, and one day after her first bottle of it she broke out with hives over her entire body. we immediatly stopped giving her milk and the hives cleared up. I have an appointment schedualed in a few weeks for her 12 month check up. when i go to that apt i will ask the dr what he suggest. i am just curiouse if anyone has had the same problem and what they were told to give there child other then formula?

First of all, don't EVER give her milk in the bottle. You don't want her to associate milk with bottles or you'll never be able to get her off of the bottle. At a year, they're done with bottles. Introduce milk in a sippy cup only. My nephew is deathly allergic to ALL dairy, including eggs. It's a lifestyle change, but it only takes a couple of trips to the store to really get the hang of it. The doctor will suggest soy or rice milk if she has a true allergy. My nephew is on Silk Vanilla. Personally, I wouldn't have given him flavored soy milk to start, but he likes it and that's what they chose. How is she with other dairy? Did you try organic milk? It could be the pesticides and additives and not the actual lactose in the milk. Just something to look into. All you can do is read labels--lots of soy milk and yogurt, and a vitamin supplement should do the trick.

Its not exactly the same problem - but all of my kids were on Soy formula due to cows milk allergies. I was able to switch my oldest to cows milk at a year with no problems and I will try switching the baby in a few months when he turns a year. We will see if it goes as well as it did with my oldest or as disastrous as with my second child. I tried switching him at a year to cows milk, but he got ridiculous diarrhea. My doctor and I took him off cows milk right away and switched him to Soy milk (Silk or 8th Continent are the best tasting in my opinion). He was good on Soy milk and had to stay on it until he was around 3 1/2 - when he was finally able to tolerate the cows milk. He is 8 years old now and has no problem with cows milk or dairy at all. Maybe Soy will be your solution until your daughters system can handle cows milk. Good Luck.

    Milk allergy can be deadly.

You need to see an allergist. Also look at the following sites

    and

You should also know how to read labels to avoid milk(and any other dairy items like cheese and yogurt).

In addition you should always carry an epi-pen jr. to help keep your child safe.

    Don't delay. Educate yourself.

this is tough... My daughter isn't allergic (had testing done) but sensitive (she gets really bad colds, ear infections, etc). I chose to giver her fortified rice milk instead of soy because I heard that too much soy messes with baby girls hormones levels. I do feed her soy foods (cheese, yogurt, tofu) but use the rice milk instead of cows milk. It's not perfect but thankfully temporary until their immune systems catch up.

Milk allergies are not uncommon. You can substiture milk for soy milk. You will, however, need to make sure that she receives enough calcium substitute to make up for it. You can try broccoli for one. Since she is being tested for milk, have her tested for peanuts and tree nuts while you are there.
