Why is Christmas not Christmas anymore?

Christmas is a pagan holiday. Santa Claus does not exist. Jesus was born earlier in the year. Why do people become shopping idiots during this time of the year? Is it the retail giants?

Hmmm ... whatever the "behind the scenes" meanings of Christmas ... I do prefer to just enjoy this day as a special day for our family and loved ones. Treasure the togetherness and cheeful that it brings. shopping is just a little part of the caring expression to those loved ones. :).

I suspect that Christmas isn't a pagan holiday. At least not anymore. It may have originated from a pagan holiday, but that doesn't mean it is one today.

Santa Claus does not exist? No. However, there was someone who was known as Saint Nikolaus who did drive a sleigh and gave presents to children (hence where the idea came from), iirc.

Why do people become shopping idiots during this time of the year? Because of sales, I would assume.

However, shopping for Christmas gifts really originates from Roman holidays when it was customary for one person to buy a gift and give something to someone else. This has evolved, obviously, into the hideous market-driver that it has become. However, the shopping season is good for the economy, and I'll not complain about the taxes that are collected that are spent on social betterment programs and things like roads and law enforcement.

Christmas is NOT a pagan holiday, Yule, Winter solstice is celebrated between december 20 and 23rd. Christmas came about by the Roman Fathers Christ-mass, Chisten-mas became christmas.

Santa Claus came about from St. Nicholas, who, following Jesus's commandment, "Sell all your possesions and give to the poor". Which he did, and he continued to keep giving.

Christmas was not a big hit with the churches, since it was so close to the Roman Pagan holiday Saturnella, and the winter festivals, they refused to celebrat the birth of christ on that day. Christmas did not become a hit here in the states until the 1800's, and it was more secular thatn religious.

Thanks to marketing in stores, like Macy's, woolworths, Gimbles dept. store and others, christmas became a way for retailers to make money. People became shopping "idiots" because of all the glitz and lights, and sounds of the season, not to mention competative reteilors and sales.

If there had to be a time to pinpoint the birth of Jesus, it wold be in the Springtime. Which would have been a more appropriate time since that is the time of births. His birth was incorperated on december 25th. to bring pagans into the church to welcome the birth of the "SON", instead of the "SUN" king, both promised a new beginning as spring approached, new life and new hope.

I don't care if Christmas originated as a pagan holiday. What I care about is that until recently we could ALL celebrate this time of year without any problems. No one CARED if we called it Christmas.

For me it is a time to remember Christs' birth. We know he was NOT BORN on Dec. 25. We just REMEMBER his birth at that time.

We should still be able to do that without all the craziness happening today.

It is a FIGHT to keep the Christmas of yesteryear alive as it was....

Christ died for me. He is my savior, my redeemer, my deliverer, my brother, my perfect bestest friend, my everything. I fall more in love with him each day...he is my peace, my sanity, my soul protector, He is my mercy, my strength, my pilot... He died FOR ME, FOR US, He is so precious.... Christmas is one time of the year that as I put the lights on the tree... I am reminded of the light that HE is... as I walk through the mall shopping for everyone I care about... I see people in joy... I have countless opportunities to share with people what this holiday means to me... I have countless opportunities to wish people a merry Christ birthday!

some say st. nick i.e. was a great giver of his time... i like to believe he was so because he knew the Lord as HIS saviour... its hard for little children sometimes to comprehend some of this... in time the real story of christmas can be understood...

don't lose the holiday spirit... romans 8:28 says...28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,[a] who[b] have been called according to his purpose.

i.e. HE makes lemonade out of lemons...

    take care have peace...
