What about the Reds signing Cordero?
Sign Cordero to a big deal, sure it makes your pen a lot better but what about your starters. Harang is good, Arroyo needs get back to his form from two years ago, and Bailey needs to improve his bb to k ratio to improve. Beyond those three they have nothing. You need some starters to pitch well enough to use your pen. Do you think it is wasted money? If they are out of it by the trading deadline I could see them moving Cordero for prospects.

I think this was a bad signing for the Reds. They aren't that good and Cordero wont have many leads to protect. They should have spent the 46 million elsewhere.

I have to go huh for the guy that says its only a dream because Cordero's agent wouldn't let him sign with Cincinnati. The only thing that is left to do on the deal is for Cordero to pass a physical.
The Reds have four of the top prospects in the game. Bailey who was pitching hurt for pretty much all of his starts, but I agree he has to walk less batters and strike out more....Joey Votto who is a solid .300 25 homer 1B with some speed.....Cueto, who while lacking Bailey's stuff has superior control. I doubt he makes the team out of ST but he'll be a factor very soon. And finally the top prospect in all of baseball Jay Bruce. Scouts that have been around awhile say that Bruce is the best OF they've seen since Griffey.
They also still have a young team with Dunn, Josh Hamilton (who has a ton of talent, not many could be away from the game for four years barely play above class A and post the numbers he did in the majors) Brandon Phillips, and Edwin Encarncion.
They lack in starting pitching, but are not anywhere near as bad off as most people think. Harang is a legitimate ace...probalby one of the more underrated starters around, Arroyo is a innings eater and they have Bailey and Cueto ready to go to fill out the rotation. When Arroyo is your number 4 starter things are not to bad. They also still have some solid starters in the minors.
The bullpen last year was the Reds major weakness, if you didn't follow the team you wouldn't understand just how many games the group blew in the seventh and eighth innings. Adding Cordero is huge for the Reds because it allows them to slot down their two best relievers into set up roles.
This is one of the rare instances when adding someone like Cordero is actually worth around ten to fifteen wins.
I don't see them moving Cordero at the deadline, because with their young core they still have plenty to play for in the coming years.
They would attempt to trade Griffey first...I say attempt because with his ten and five rights he can block any deal. (ten years in MLB/five with current team)
That being said while I think its a major improvement and something that shows the fans of the Reds that they are doing everything that they can to improve the team I think I rather have signed two lesser bullpen guys that could get people out and moved Jared Burton into the closer role then dropped the money spent on Cordero on a big time starter next off-season.

Cordero helps the Reds, the way that Guardado would have had he not been injured... anything that strengthens the back-end of you bullpen makes the game shorter. That means, more wins. For all you know Bailey may become a strong mid-relief or set-up guy next season. The Reds SCORE plenty of runs -- what team are you watching? They still have HR hitters and decent young prospects (like 3B Encarnacion) and Griffey should not be overlooked as a 3rd place hitter, since he's still a very dangerous hitter. The NL Central is where they play, after all -- and you don't have to be the Red Sox or Yankees.. to win it.
You kids kill me... anything you ADD to a team, that costs NOTHING but salary (and believe me, every team has tons of money, since the rosters are all tax deductible, 100%, even beyond revenue sharing, luxury payments, etc.).

I am big reds fan but sadly I dont see them competing seriously for world series 'til god knows when...they gotta get rid of junior and dunn and need a couple 2 more efficient bats in lineup from 1-5 besides philips, encarnanion, and votto
like a high on bas % lead-off and a efficient power hitting (not striking out) rbi man in the 4th spot
the starters look ok...but they need a aging/old but solid #3 and the pen looks a lot better now...best to deal jr & dunn for starting pitching prospects and let belisle, bailey, cueto, and others fight it out for 4 & 5

Let me start by saying this is a solid acquisition... however, this is a guy who just 2 seasons ago posted an era close to 5.00 with texas, he has put up solid numbers for milwaukee but i think a 4 yr deal and money close to 12mil per season is asking a lot. heres a guy making more than billy wagner, nearly as much as mariano rivera, more than jason isringhausen and 2 times what trevor hoffman makes.. you talk about guys who have maintained consistency over a long period of time, and this guy is making more than or close to what all the guys i mentioned make... with that said, its a good signing for the reds, it can and WILL help shore up a bullpen that blew nearly half of its saves last season...
Now on the relief pitcher front, i would think its tough to give free agent relief pitchers more than 3 years... given the instability of relief pitchers and how nothing is guaranteed with them year after year... look at the silly contract the white sox gave scott linebrink.. 4 yrs - 21 million... heres a guy who has NEVER pitched in the AL, and hes getting a guaranteed 4 yr deal for 21 mil... not only has he never pitched in the AL, but his statistics have declined each of the past 3 seasons where his era has gone up, walks have increased and k's have gone down in each of those seasons.. and his opponent batting avg has also gone up.. *not good signs for relievers*
now i know we arent talking about linebring, but in making a point 4 yr deals are risky for relief pitchers... I think its a good signing NOW, but i think over the course of 4 yrs, it could be risky.. i could be wrong, but just a hunch (look at the deal the blue jays signed to bj ryan

Cordero will help, but the Reds have many problems to fix, otherwise they will be in last again next year.

the reds still have a long way to go they need to get some good prospects and get some more pitching help and they still need that one hitter to spark the lineup

Sounds like a good plan, and a good dream, but it doesn't sound like reality. He's a great closer and his agency won't let him go. Don't get your hopes up.

they need a big player. they should get in the mix for Cabrera or Santana. either would make them instant contenders.
