Why is "The Sound of Music" considered a christmas movie?
It's always baffled me, why they would choose this one as a Christmas film. Christmas does not happen in the film (it takes place in summer and fall), though I think it does in one of the previous German films.
The film premiered on March 2 1965, not any where near Christmas. And I think the only thing it has to do with Christmas is this one promo photo they shot for it.

Plus Maria is leaving the convent...so? How was it decided that this movie that has nothing to do with Christmas become a Christmas movie? And a song "My Favorite Things" that also has nothing to do with Christmas become a Christmas song?
This has always bugged me and I've asked why but many people don't seem to know why. Isn't that kind of strange don't you think?

It probably just gained that reputation because they show it on television every year, usually between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day.

The film does not depict Christmas, nor does it take place during Winter... the trees are quite green and it looks to be early summer or late spring.
The film debuted in the Spring.
So, we're left with only one solution--the networks play the movie on TV every year around Christmas.
But, why?
Probably because they know that people are feeling warm and "family-oriented." It is "cold" and the sun goes down early (in the Northern Hemisphere) so people are not likely to be outside. The networks know that they have (more or less) a captive audience. And, they know that captive audience will (with all those warm happy fuzzy family feelings during the holidays) want to watch a feel-good film, together. Thus, this all comes together for the Networks as a prime money making opportunity (that captive audience will watch many, many commercials during the movie broadcast). So, just like so many other Christmas traditions, we find one that has its heart in commercialism.
Now, that I have finished THAT little schpeele, I will return to watching the Sound of Music... because it is a Christmas tradition for me, too. :D

Is it really considered a Christmas movie? I always thought of it as more of a family movie. Although, over the Christmas the networks are fond of showing musicals (White Christmas, Holiday Inn, etc.) and family movies. That must be where the association comes from.

It is about the Intuit religion. Hercules is about the ancient Greek religion (now it's considered mythology, but at the time, the Greeks considered it religion) Prince of Egypt does have a little (note a little) more historical basis, but if they are considering Brother Bear and Hercules as religious, I don't see how they don't include Prince of Egypt in there also. Maybe it's because it's more inclusive because Jews, Christians, and Muslims all believe in Moses.

It's probably played around the holidays because it's considered a 'family' film. I agree with you - it's not really Christmas appropriate based on the plot.

i dont think it was at all considered a christmas movie, but a family movie. that's probably why its always on in christmas time, cause christmas is supposedly a family time, and that movie is family oriented.

Because with a three hour running time (without commercials), when on Earth other than Christmas is anybody going to take the time to watch it?

to me it does not seem like a christmas movie either just the family film factor.

i'm sorry i have no answer to your question. but i too have been wondering this for years. i was just complaining about it when My Favorite Things was blaring through the speakers at the store this past weekend. no one could answer my question. i got home and googled it but to no avail. but we aren't the only ones trying to wrap our brains around this pairing.
