Some Bible help. I remember a question on Y!A that tried to ridicule Christmas but one answerer ...?
gave a passage where, I seem to recall, Jews were directed to bring in a tree and decorate it. It had nothingt o do necessarily with Christmas per se, you understand, more like a coincidnce but still I need that passage for a sermon my wife is preparing. Can't find it in our concordance.
Anyone know the passage ...
Thanks in advance .....
Thanks, the Jerimiah passage was the one I was looking for, thanks. Wifey was grateful. Unfortunately, the context was not as I recall and so it doesn't support her message. Good research guys.
Note to someone, ca't recall who: my wife is the Minister - she know's her Bible fairly well but she's not one of those that can pull a passage out of her head. She knows plenty has read the bible through several times, gone through the Bethel course, etc. but this was obscure and she didn't know it, couldn't easily find it.
Thanks daydream, that was the question I saw. It does refer to idols made of wood not decorated trees so not much use for my wife's sermon.

Is this the reference?

Well, the reason why you can't find it like that is because the passage that you are looking for speaks against decorating a tree. It is in Jeremiah 10: 1-4

Jeremiah 10: 2-6
2 Thus says the LORD:
“ Do not learn the way of the Gentiles;
Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven,
For the Gentiles are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the peoples are futile;
For one cuts a tree from the forest,
The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.
4 They decorate it with silver and gold;
They fasten it with nails and hammers
So that it will not topple.
5 They are upright, like a palm tree,
And they cannot speak;
They must be carried,
Because they cannot go by themselves.
Do not be afraid of them,
For they cannot do evil,
Nor can they do any good.”

Jeremiah 10:2-4
BUT!!!!!
A basic and important principle in reading and understanding the Bible is that all texts must be read in their contexts. What is the subject being discussed or the circumstances involved? The prophet Jeremiah was opposing and rebuking idolatry. One of the apparently popular forms of idolatry at his time was the formation of wood images cut from trees and then the worshiping of those images as gods or images of false gods. That is what Jeremiah is talking about in Jeremiah 10:2-4--people cutting down trees to fashion idols. The prophet Isaiah speaks in parallel language attacking the same kind of idolatry. Please read Isaiah 44:13-20 for more detail.

It's in Jeremiah 10, talking about idol worship.
"For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. They decorate it with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers So that it will not topple. They are upright, like a palm tree, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, For they cannot do evil, Nor can they do any good.”
Keep it in context. It speaks about it being "worked" that is, carved into an image. Christmas trees are not idols that are prayed to and expect to speak or do good.

No I did not see that one.
I have lost some respect for American Jews. I felt sad when I found out some of their major organizations were responsible for hiring attorneys and working with the ACLU to sue American towns so they could get Christmas trees removed from public places.
Do an internet search.
Maybe your wife could mention this fact in her "Jews fellowshipping with Christians" sermon.

Funny that they call it a Christams tree when there was no Christmas at that time. Christmas happened after Jesus was born, it is his B-day, right? And what book is this in? Isahia? Thousands of years before his birth? The tree in this scripture is talking about a pole that's it.

I have never heard of that.
Are you sure it isn't the passage from Jeremiah that some people use to condemn Christmas trees?

Hmm -the only passage I recall in in the NT , telling christians NOT to have a tree. Sorry!

I'm not sure it's in the Bible, but it sounds a little like the preparations for Sukkot.
