Help! Hives! Allergic Reaction to Zithromax? Nothing Stops The Itching!?
Hi. I was prescribed Zithromax for bronchitis last Monday. I finished up the three pill pack and on Saturday morning, I woke up with a rash. It wasn't so bad at first but it's become so bad that I was up ALL NIGHT LONG itching and nothing helps it. I called the doctors office today and he told me to take Benadryl pills. THEY DO NOT HELP ME. I have also tried rubbing the Benadryl cream on it and that doesn't help either. Any tips so I can get some kind of relief from this rash? It looks like raised white bumps and little red bumps everywhere but my face and feet. When I cover up in bed, the warmth makes it worse too. Help!

Just wanted to clarify a few things others have said. I don't think the benedryl and benedryl cream counteract eachother. One's a topical ointment, the other is a pill, and although they do have a bit of the same ingredient... it's not like a positive and a negative cancelling eachother out.
Also, it's not a sulfa allergy as there is no sulfa in zithromax. It just so happens that a lot of allergic reactions tend to look the same. I'm allergic to most antibiotics and can ONLY take Zithromax.
Keep taking the benadryl as prescribed, You can try taking an oatmeal bath, Aveeno makes a good product that I use when I have allergic reactions. Cool compresses help too, but in general its a pretty miserable experience.
If you do find it hard to breathe. or it feels like your throat is tight please go to the hospital. And if the allergic reaction doesnt go away, the next step is to be put on a steroid like prednisone.
Keep in mind that each medicine has a specific time that it remains in the body, so you could have a reaction for several days after you stop taking the medicine before you start feeling better.
Hope this helps you, it does eventually go away though I promise!!!

Valtrex is a popular antiviral medicine that effectively slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection. The active ingredient in Valtrex is valaciclovir. The antiviral medicine is found helpful for treating genital herpes, shingles and cold sores. Though Valtrex does not cure herpes, it is found immensely useful in reducing the symptoms of the infection.
It doesn't work over night, it takes about 4-7 days before you start to notice a difference. Break outs can last any where from 1-3 weeks with medication, try to be patient. You an do other things like take warm epsom salts baths to help sooth the symptoms. If you don't notice a difference in the beak out with in a week or two then go back to your doctor, the medication may not be working for you.

OOH- It sounds like you have a SULFER ALERGY! Is there sulfer in zithromax? You are describing the exact symptoms of a sulfer allergy. If so stop taking the medication immediately. I know they say to always take antibiotics until they are gone, but if you are having an allergic reaction removing the source is the only option. They will say come on in to the ER, but if you don't have insurance, don't bother. It's not life threatening and not worth your money. If it does not contain sulfer, it could be another ingredient that is causing the problem. Discontinue use. I have never found any antibiotic that agreed with me past the third day.

My suggestion would be to go to the ER NOW. They can give you prednisone or epinephrine, both of which will relieve the allergic reaction. But that is only something you can get if you go to the doctor, or ER. Hope you feel better!

That's odd....
I'm only allergic to zithromax.
My body responds quick to most antibiotics.
zithromax made my feet and hands itch with red bumps.
