Cemeteries at night?

Why do cemeteries seem so much more scary at night then in the day time?

The reason I am asking this is because I accidently took a wrong turn outside a new city and I couldn't find anywhere to turn around because the road was too narrow when I finally came up on an entrance to a cemetery, but due to the angle of the turn to get onto it,I couldn't just pull in and then back out,so I had to drive into it,as I was driving thru it I became very frightened and had this very strong weak feeling come all over my body,(I hate to say this, but I thought I was going to pee myself).

I have been in cemeteries in the daytime and never was scared.

Have you ever been in a cemetery at night and feel like I did?

Well, there are several compounding factors. The first is the most obvious, the association with death. Second is the darkness. In the daytime, you can see everything around you, so you know there's nothing to fear. At night however, danger could be hidden in shadows, so humans are naturally more on guard or nervous. Third, one must take into account the physical properties of a cemetery. Large, open space allows for a lot of wind which could be behind many eerie noises. Also, the many tombstones and statues can create weird shadows that fool the mind. The final factor is unique to your story. That factor is that you were lost and therefore already cautious. Had you been walking instead of driving, the uneven terrain that all cemeteries have would have added yet another reason to get spooked.

Everything is scarier when you're in the dark.

I actually don't mind cemetaries at night simply because they are quiet and completely void of live people.

It's pretty common to be scared of cemeteries though because people are generally scared of death. It doesn't help that there is folk lore around things like zombies and vampires, which generally come out at night and involve people being resurected from the grave.

Try to go back, see if you have the same problem again. The only way to get over a fear is to face it.
