USB ports?

The company I work for have blocked USB ports so we cannot use them. Is here a way of covertly turning them back on again without alerting IT?

We use Toshiba lap tops, not sure of the model.

Update:

Thanks for your ideas folks, unforunately none of them work. They truley have them locked down. I work in an independant hospital in central London so security is tighter than a ducks you-know-what, I shouldn't even officially be on here.

Not if they're doing it right. When you log into the network (only way to get into your computer) the Script logic that the Network Admin sets blocks those ports.

If you know the Local Admin password, you could get in without logging onto the network. There are bootable CD's that allow you to change that Local Admin PW but your CD is probably blocked, too.

The reason to do this is to keep virus off the Network

GOOD Luck..... Mine are blocked, too.

Try this - Find your My Computer icon, right click, properties.

In the system properties dialog box, select the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button.

Scroll through the list of hardware items until you see Universal Serial Bus Controllers - expand that and look for and of the items that may have a red x through it. If there is anything with an X, right click that and click the Enable feature.

That my work for you, if it doesn't, then your IT staff have them locked down completely.

  • I'm sure your company did this "blocking" for a reason, even if you do not agree. If you could manage to defeat the block you might get fired. Is it worth that?

if they are off... leave them off

using your work pc for out of work things can get you in trouble

my friend had a power point presentation.. and had a load of "unwelcome" images pop up.. and that comes under gross misconduct..

they are blocked so you can't virus them, or perhaps take sensitive info etc

which is important using their pc? or your job.. look at it that way..use ya own pc for none work related stuff.

usb ports will be disabled through the bios its doubtfull that they would constantly check to see if anybody has changed it althought it would be very easy to see if you have also most bios will be password protected

If you can log on as the system administrator, you can change the settings and turn them back on..
