A question about baptism?

I was just wondering if they were baptised again or if I am reading it wrong?

Acts 19

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

They were baptized again, because they were baptized by John the Baptist’s baptism after the baptism Christ commanded had come into effect.

Christ’s baptism is a likeness of his death, burial, and resurrection. (Romans 6:3-13, Colossians 2:12) John’s could not have represented this because it had not yet happened.

Also, at John’s baptism, they were taught to look for a Christ that would come later. At Christ’s baptism, the one being baptized needed to believe in Christ and believe the gospel first. The Gospel is the good news that Christ had died, was buried, and rose again. Those in the time of John could not have believed this because it had not yet happened.

Jesus said, “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved” (Mark 16:16)

In Acts 8, After Phillip preached to him Jesus, the eunuch asked, “…what hinders me from being baptized?” (verse 35-36) Phillips reply was “If you believe you may.” (verse 37) This again shows the belief in Jesus comes before baptism.

Those in Acts 19 had not been taught this correctly. They were baptized under the wrong authority. They needed to be baptized “in the name of Jesus Christ”.

“In the name of Jesus Christ” means by his authority, or according to what he instructed.

These people, instead, had been baptized according to the instructions of John. Since they were taught incorrectly, they could not have obeyed correctly. You can’t obey correctly until you have been taught correctly.

When they were taught correctly, they obeyed correctly by being “baptized… in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.” (Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16, Mark 16:15-16, Luke 24:47, Matthew 28:18-20, 1 Peter 3:21, Colossians 2:12, Galatians 3:27)

    Peaceful,

They were not CHRISTIANS at that point. They had been baptized by John, the Baptizer. He was Jewish and was preparing the way for the Messiah (Jesus Christ). The Apostles Baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost after the Ascension of CHRIST into Heaven. Those who were baptized were washed of their sins and became Christians. Have a wonderful week.

    Thanks,

Did you know there are two baptisms? One by fleshly man and water, the other by the HOLY SPIRIT,

Luk 3:16 John answered, saying unto [them] all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

The last pentacost will be just like this when the SPIRIT is on those thats delivered up because they refuse to worship satan and his beast system. Matt 14:9-14.

Act 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Act 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

Act 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

thats right, to be saved you need to be baptized in water, then in the Holy Ghost.. The evidence is the speaking in tongue

Source(s): there are two baptisms one water and one Spirit
