Ideas for a first tattoo...?

I am looking to get my first tattoo (I'm a 30 year-old guy, btw), and I am looking to get something like the following done (which JUST happens to be the same pic I use as my Avatar):

Any suggestions as to a suitable location on the body, or how large to get it?

(And based on the that - a ballpark figure of how much it would cost...)

Update:

Great answers so far!

As to the meaning behind it - there really isn't one... I've always been into things like skulls, dragons, and the Grim Reaper (which will likely be incorporated into a future piece).

You arent going to get away with doing a tattoo like this smaller than a fist and probably much more likely at least the size of your palm plus the first knuckles of your fingers. Looking at an area of skin is easier to visualize than inches for me, so its how I describe things.

I would get something like this on my upper arms or my calf if I were a man. I like big statment making tattoos in those places and this seems like a piece that could hold its own in an area.

The best person to give you direction on size and placement will be the artist you have chosen. They will know how much detail and shading needs to be added in order to make the piece appear how you want it as a gorgeous tattoo. They will also know how large the tattoo needs to be to accomodate this work. Once you have the minimum size, you and your artist will be able to really look at various places that it would fit you.

I would expect this tattoo to cost you at least 200 dollars and probably a good bit more than that. I don't know how charming you can be or how charitable your artist may be feeling towards you, but I would save up 300-400 dollars.

I would suggest that you choose the most highly recommended artist in the area and one who's work is truly impressive. Making a skull tattoo really look amazing is going to take talent and skill. You don't want to look like you got slapped with some flash off the wall, so go to an artist who's quality of work will make it obvious that you did not.

I would put it on your back, near your shoulder blade. That is my favorite spot for a tattoo, and as much as I love the tattoo on the center of my back, I wish I didn't get it so I could put one off centered, out by the shoulder. It covers up well when you need it to be, and is easily displayed if you want to show it off. They only other place I would consider getting it is on the calf. But you can make it larger on the back, so I would put it there. I would make it at least softball sized if not a little larger. This will allow the artist to put in a lot of detail, that they won't be able to put in a small tattoo, and you have the room on your back, use it. If you went with that size, I would guess that it will be about $250. That is just a guess, based on what I have paid for mine. Price depends on the artist, the better the artist the more it will cost. Good luck, Enjoy your new tattoo. Be careful, they are addictive.

By the way, i really like the choice you made, does it have any personal meaning, or just a cool design?

Not alot of detail in it but alot of shading will have to be done so you'd need to do it a good size. As for location it will look best at the top of the arm, calf or on the chest. Price around $100 - 250

I would put it in a place that can be easily hidden (depending on your line of work) like your calf and spend some time researching the artist who will put it on you, spend as much as you can afford on the person that is marking your body "forever"make sure it is something that you are going to be proud to show now as well as 30 years from now.

Between your shoulder blades, back of your calf, maybe chest... I'd say it'll cost you somewhere between $250 - $350, depending on how big you get it.

don't get your name! I hate when people have their own names pasted on them. It's just so..self-inflated.

Should get it about the size of a baseball or a little bigger on the upper arm or on your chest if you have a nice bod.

I think guys with tattoos on their arms and chest are damned sexy! ;-)

Get in on your chest. Or the back of your calf. Depending on the size and color...I say it would cost atleast $200.
