Where do I go to get licenses for me Ebay Business?
I need to get my licenses and a permit for a home based business, I was referred to the Department of Revenue. Can I get everything done there or will I need to visit other places?
I know I dont need a license to sell on ebay, but I want licenses for a legitimate online business and for dealing with wholesalers.

What is required will depend on where you live. Anyone can sell on ebay. You don't need a license to sell the occasional household item or craft.
In some places, Tennessee for example, if you plan to do this as an occupation or vocation you will need an auctioneers license. (3-5 days training mandated by the state last I heard.) Being auctioneer requires you to escrow and assume other financial responsibilities if you are selling for others.
Tennessee is an exception. In most places all you need is a home occupancy (Home based business) license. If you are a reseller, where I live you need a state reseller's license in order to get wholesale pricing from suppliers. A federal tax ID number is a good thing, especially if you plan to open a bank account or incorporate. WAMU will give you free business checking if you have your business name registered with the state.
*In my state, the home occupancy license came from the county I live in - $120 annual and prorated. (With the ocuppancy license you get a mandatory visit from the fire marshall to see that you have the wiring to handle office equipment and that you haven't made your house into a fire hazard hoarding inventory.)
*The name registration comes from the Secretary of State. (Can be done on the web for $25)
*The federal tax ID request can be done by fax or mail to the IRS and it costs nothing. (Don't tell them you expect to have employees if you don't currently have them. They will hound you for witholding taxes for your workers otherwise.)
*With a tax ID (or your social) and your name registration proof Washington Mutual Bank will open a free business checking account for you.
*Reseller's license (also called a state tax ID which means not all state's requre that you have this license) comes from the Dept of Revenue and is free. It requires sellers to collect taxes on in-state sales and allows the state to track your sales so they can tax you. They will want your bank acct number AND your federal tax ID prior to issuing. This license will exempt you from some taxes paid by individuals because you are a business.

Yes the department of Revenue will handle it all for you. They have what you need for your online, ebay or home business. Some citites also require the licenses as well as the state and they will also handle it for you. You can get it all done online, but takes 4-6 wks, or walk in and get it instantly! Good Luck and enjoy the business.

The revenue department primarily deals with sales tax. You don't need any other license to sell on ebay.

You may have to get a tax ID number but I never heard of getting any license to sell on eBay.

You might want to check with your local Small Business Association. As far as I remember we didn't need one. I ran an Internet business several years ago and I was told I didn't need a license.
