Nelson Mandela and AIDS?

Is anyone else as sick of hearing about the twin towers of liberal activism--Nelson Mandela as "saint", and AIDS as a social cause?

Nelson Mandela's claim to fame, from what I gather, is he spent decades in prison. Now, he might be a nice guy, but there is no skill or particular merit involved in being a prisoner. You sit there. Enough of the accolades. Charles Manson has been in prison for going on 40 years, I don't hear anyone calling him a saint.

And AIDS? Please! I'm so tired of the AIDS ribbons and AIDS awareness campaigns. Why not have Syphillis ribbons or Gonnorhea awareness campaigns. AIDS is VD. Keep your dick in your pants and out of other guys' pants, and you'll likely never catch it. I've never met or known anyone with AIDS, but I don't associate with promiscous people of any gender/orientation, and I don't know any IV drug users.

Let's burst the bubble of liberal radicalism!

Thoughts, comments, questions?

Update:

Onyx: So AIDS is black now... thanks for the notice, you racist.

Nelson Mandela spent half his life in prison for being an anti-apartheid activist and for trying to improve conditions for his own people. He's basially the South African version of Martin Luther King. Other human rights activists all over the world rallied around him and he gave strength to his people to hold on and continue their struggle. Since when is standing up for the basic human rights of your people the equivalent of "just sitting there".

Lots of people in Africa and other places caught AIDS from cheating spouses or contaminated medical supplies. Poor education about how AIDS is transmitted is also a HUGE factor in the spread of AIDS. You say you don't associate with "promiscuous" people or IV drug users, but how will you really know if they don't just come right out and tell you or if you don't have any hard (photo or video) proof? You don't get HIV from being "promiscuous" - it only takes being having sex with the wrong person ONCE, and that once could be during a committed relationship. You better pray that everyone you know is as honest as you think they are.

And what are you, bragging because you figure that you are never going to get AIDS? And you figure that anyone trying to curb the spread of AIDS and help people in poor countries who are infected are all "liberal radicals". How about just being f*cking compassionate and wanting to help other people? If you are so "sick of hearing about" other people's efforts to do something possitive, then you always have the option and choice of just burying your head farther up your @ss.

    1) Nelson Mandela is considered a "saint" because he was a major force is ending aparteid in South Africa. He went to jail for what he believed to be wrong: separting people solely based on their skin color. I would even personally put him on the same level as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

    2) The reason there's such a big hoo-ha about AIDS is because it kills so many people each year. Besides, you don't only get it from sex: quite a few people in Africa who contract AIDS got it from their mothers, who from them were raped. These children then go on to live as orphans when their parents die from the disease because no AZT is available and/or they cannot afford it.
