How can I find an internship or summer job in a small town?

I'm looking for something to do this summer that will help me prepare for my career after I graduate college. I really don't want to work at a "teen" summer job (tourist shop, restaurant), and would be more interested in an internship or a seasonal job with a government agency. I live in a small town, though, so none of the job search sites include positions in my area. Any ideas on how I can find a job or internship?

Update:

Note: I have checked with my career services center, but all they do is give me an address to a job search site. Also, I am attending a college that is not near where I live during the summer.

You need to go to your schools career placement office and ask there.

That is how you find internships/co-ops.

Barring that, if you live in a small area, contact the local employers over the next couple months and tell them what you are looking for, you might find a job that way.

    Good luck.

Check with the Parks and Recreation Department. I'm sure they will have a job you might enjoy. You get to spend a lot of time outdoors and get paid for it.

Gee, no none. Hello?! You might try the newspaper, Internet, and a career counselor. You sound about as UN-resourceful as they come!
