If you're truly interested in chess, buy "Play Winning Chess" by Yasser Sierawan. It's superb, and covers the basics, including how the pieces move and is an excellent foundation to work from. It also explains some basic principles to start clocking up some wins!

For a free alternative, I believe one of the links provided by the first guy should do fine. Also, I believe Wikipedia explains the basics, just look up the main "chess" page. Chess is a really rewarding game, but you shouldn't feel forced to play.

On the plus side, chess should help with your concentration, visualisation and logic skills. Plus it feels great to crush someone with a series of moves they just couldn't work out!
