Do Americans live in fear compared to Canada?

Recently I have been doing a report on bullying and I had a subtopic of school shootings and had rented the Bowling for Columbine which is a great documentary. It had got me to think that as Americans we live in fear. Compared to Canadians, Canadians have more guns than us, more friendly, have less crime on the news that makes people live in fear. On the other hand us Americans will turn on the news and see there has been a murder here or their and makes the viewers live in fear. Also American have a death rate of 11,127 by someone killing someone else by a gun and Canada has more guns than we do but they only have about 37 deaths each year by this. Why is this? Is it fear? The media? Not thinking enough before acting? I think I may find my self living in Canada or the UK (also has about 37 deaths each year) in the near future.

Update:

I haven't touched a television in about a year and I feel great that I don't live off it and feed of lies that the media gives us each day. I prefer searching my own answers in books, people and creditable internet web pages.

Your facts are wrong. We in Canada do not have more guns than you do in the USA. The USA is the most heavily armed country in the world. Militarily, Citizens, Police and Law Enforcement, etc. We do not even have armed guards at our schools or hospitals nor at our airports. If you want fire power the US has it. With all that weaponry, I think it creates a phobia. I sure don't know who told you that we have more guns than you, but that is definiitly wrong. Check with the American Rifle Association. Also, for some reason, some people feel it is your right to bear arms???? You have us outgunned 79 to 1. I'm taliking about registered firearms of course.

I would say they do! whilst I was studying for my media exam I had to research the gun crime in Canada and the United States.

In Canada people could go out and leave their door open and return safely knowing their property would not have been violated in any shape or form.

Canada is not at war with the Iraqi's, America and Britain are so they should be more frightened than their Canadian counter-parts.

Ding! Check out "The Culture of Fear" by Barry Glassner - it isn't limited to guns.

The problem with guns, I've found, seems to be more that we have more on the streets then some countries have people in prison. Without proper guidance or guarding, they get into the hands of children who are raised in a world where the video game winners get points for killing someone and the media only reports on death. You've got a recipe for disaster right there.

That's basically because the initial pioneers of America were mostly descended from criminals - simple as. When you get a culture or society that's based on lawlessness and self-interest (do some research on the foundation of America - culture was in the minority), you get descendants who have an almost war like frame of mind. In America everyone knows everyone who's either in the army or navy etc - or prison. It's an aggressive mind culture that's been honed over hundreds of years and is in the American psychy.

Don't know about living in fear, But the USA definitly has very lax gun laws, far too lax I think. Canadians are just more laid back.

Dory: Are you dumb. Don't write before fact checking. Hand Guns are legal in Canada, they have to be registered and stored properly, and transportation of said hand gun is strictly regulated, but they ARE legal. I know I have three, and I've never been arrested for having them.

wow strange.. I did the same thing too. I put my TV away and will only take it out if there is an emergency. I feel great and less manipulated .

I get most of my info from free press and it works out just fine for me.

Americans do live in fear from violence, terrorism, perversion and germs o yes germs.

You cannot have a news program or TV show without one of those .

OK I love those CSI shows and I really liked the news too but how many times have I felt like crap, disgusted or afraid after ?

I can't even count its in the 1,000's

How much was my mind scared from hearing about all those little children raped and mutilated.

This is the framework of our mental sanity , no wonder there are so many killers and perverts out there now.

Bye Bye TV and hello to my own mind

Are You Kidding? Canadians, may have more "rifles", FOR HUNTING, at "THAT" time of year! But All Hand Guns that came to Canada, came through U.S.A.! Choke on that! There are "murders" here as well, not as many, but, still, TOO MANY! Hand guns in Canada are not legal, and hopefully never will be! They all come by U.S.A.! Take your (HAND) guns and Shove 'EM! Please! And the Jamaicans, who bring 'em!
