When I need to stop breastfeeding, what is the best way to use the frozen supply?

I'll have to quit breastfeeding/pumping soon. I have some frozen milk available. Is it better to give this to the baby exclusively until gone, or would she benefit more from getting a few ounces a day for a longer period?

I was thinking a small amount a day for a longer period of time would provide her with some degree of protection for longer, but I can't back that up...what are your thoughts?

Small amounts a day are fine to do as it will help her tummy adjust to the new foods being introduced,

i think you are onto something with protecting her a bit longer with the brreast milk but thats just me

Spacing it out will help get her transitioned to whatever is coming up next, whether it's whole milk or formula (depending on her age, of course).

So yes, keep giving a few ounces a day for a longer period - slowly decrease the amount of breastmilk and increase the amount of what she's transitioning to...it's easier on her system this way, instead of an abrupt changeover.

Can we give any suggestions how to help you continue to pump or nurse longer? Keep in mind that it's winter cold season, which is really not the best time to wean. Can you get her though the winter before you try to transition her?

How old is your baby? Has she had formula before? Is she used to taking a bottle?

Is she over a year or younger than a year? If she is younger than a year, you'll have to transition her to formula. How you use the breastmilk that you have pumped already may depend some on how willing she is to take formula (or, if over a year, whole cow's milk). You may find that you need to mix her bottles half and half with breastmilk and formula/cow's milk and gradually use less breastmilk as she gets used to it. If she will willingly drink either, I guess I'd try to spread it out a little longer if I could.

I wish I had a frozen supply! I'd say once you stop breastfeeding go 50/50 with breastmilk and formula.

Spacing it out sounds good and when your baby is completely off of it and you still have some give it to a mother who needs it.
